Would appreciate other's views on this.
A week ago I went into Sports Direct to buy a birthday present for a friend (whom I was meeting for lunch that day). I bought a jacket and paid for it in cash. I gave my friend the jacket at the lunch, however when she got it home and tried it on, it did not fit her.
I picked up the jacket from her today and took it back to Sports Direct in the hope that I could exchange it for a bigger size but did not have the receipt and therefore was not holding my breath...but what happened shocked me....
I went to the service desk and gave them the old spiel and asked nicely if it was be posssible to exchange the jacket. The assistant scanned the jacket into the tll and asked when I had bought it - I told her the time and date and she said the jacket was not sold on that day! I told her it was and remember quite clearly as it was my friends birthday that day - hence why I bought the jacket.
The assistant then went on to say that they have had a lot of 'thiefts' in the store! and the only reason the jacket would not be on the system would be if it was stolen!!!
I asked her if she was accussing me of theft - she said she did not specifically say that but she would not be issuing me an exchange.
I left the store in tears, never have I felt so humilated.
I went back there tonight to speak with the manager and he also checked the system and told me that the jacket could not have been sold that day and also said that the jacket must have been stolen!
I am now bloody furious - its not about the exchange anymore - but the way I have been treated!!

They could have been more tactful about it but if their systems are telling them that a jacket hasn't been bought that day then thats all the information they have to deal with. Especially as you don't have a receipt.
I'm not exactly sure as to what you want them to say with regards to not giving you the exchange, would you have accepted them just saying no to the exchange and giving no further reasons? Also from your post it appears that they haven't accused you of stealing it, just that it had been stolen. Not much different I know but important to clear up.0 -
Tell them to check CCTV recording for that exact time and date. They cant deny you that right.0
-
What 'right' is that? They are under no obligation to check the CCTV.
Aren't you entitled to a copy of any personal data that an organisation may hold on you (Data Protection Act)? I'm pretty sure that includes CCTV footage, although you may be asked to pay a "nominal" administration fee (~£10?) to receive a copy.
I would forget about the exchange, but write a letter to their head office demanding an apology!0 -
sports direct have sophisticated sales tills and scanners, if they scan an item, they can see exactly when it is sold.
so, i dont see that they are making a mistake, there is a lie along the line somewhere.
and no receipt, no credit card payment receipt etc certainly means they are pointing the finger.Target Savings by end 2009: 20,000

You're missing the point - I did not steal the jacket, I am not a thief! I took the jacket to the till, whereby it was scanned and the security tag removed and I handed over the money for it.
My point is that either their systems are not as sophisticated as another has suggested, or the sales assistant did not put the goods through the till properly and has pocketed the money.
The manager showed me the transactions on the computer on that day to show me how the system works and there were only 3 transactions for that day. However when I was there that day, the person in front of me bought about 7 items and there were two others behind me in the que buying trainers.0 -
Sounds like an issue with the system! only 3 sales in one day? hmm...
I'd not waste my time with this company by the way - getting a written apology would not be worth the effort it will take to get it.Thinking critically since 1996....0 -
As something corpoprate has said - an issue with their system..
The problem being - without any CCTV your going to have a very hard time getting them to do anything as you have no reciept and even then they dont really like to do exchanges at SD all the time.

I know they are not great on exchanges but its one thing to deny an exchange its quite another claiming that the item was stolen!
Needless to say I will not be shopping there again.0 -
I understand how you feel but if you don't have the receipt they won't exchange it anyway...0
