Better still is for one of you to remove the sick bag from the seat pocket and strategically place it near your mouth in view of people who may wish to take 'your' centre seat.

With head slightly bowed as to indicate an 'iminent puke' - that should be enough to 'dissuade' anyone from wishing to sit in between you ;).

THis of course does not work if you fly a 'proper' airline ;) that pre assigns seats

I know a group of guys that deliberately choose the middle seats if they see that window and aisles have been booked. And they wont offer to swap...lol

I like their style , it annoys me when a couple book the aisle and window seat

That said we tend to choose airlines which have pairs of seats along the sides, that way it's just the two of us without the random stranger to worry about. we have on occasion gotten lucky and had the opportunity for one of us to move to the other side of the aisle when those seats were available after the doors closed...those trips are great.

Problem with that is that those pairs of seats can be difficult to get - quite often single travellers will book either the window or the aisle leaving few pairs of seats available but lots of individual ones.

Ah, maybe it's women over a certain age then :D

But that's what they told my mum, although it may have more to do the the huge amount of money they squeeze out of her on a regular basis :rotfl:

In that case, the reason for the seat blocking is not to do with her sex but her status with the airline - many airlines will block middles seats where possible for their !!!!!!, male or female.

Perhaps, but we normally book quite far in advance and have never had an issue...I can see that it could be an issue for this sort of reason closer to the time. We've gone so far as to check seat availability before selecting our particular flights, when we were flying indirect and weren't tied to specific timings. I personally think not pre-selecting seats as early as possible one of the biggest mistakes people in the UK make...for some reason far fewer people here know it's even an option than in the US where pretty much everyone I know knows that's the first thing you do.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

I tried this on a 'proper' airline - (Air New Zealand) when I was flying in Y my wife and I had a spare seat (of 3) on the aisle.

My good wife then sat in the aisle seat which left the middle seat vacant and I duly picked up the barf bag after to avoid anyone contemplating taking the seat - even though it was assigned. So it can work where seats are 'pre assigned on a proper airline'. Of course this will only work if other seats are available in the cabin.

Of course if you fly in the pointy end with a 'proper' seat - there is less of a problem ;)!

If I'm on a long haul flight, I always ask at check-in if the seat next to me can be "blocked" as I'm a female traveling alone.......don't usually have a problem.

You're one of those fat people that needs - But refuses to pay for - 2 seats aren't you?
  • I can confirm this does not work on charter flights. If you prebook your seats and pay for them and leave the centre seat free they will 9 times out of 10 put someone in the centre seat. We did this with Thomas Cook and Thomson and we had to giggle as it is always a single traveller or the 4th party of four. Then we were asked if we could swap seats as they wanted to check on a regular basis to see if the family were ok. I think the airlines have twigged to this now.
  • Thomas Cook and certainly Thomson are not airlines worthy of any discussion.

Proper airlines will allow you to book aisle and window seats leaving the centre vacant. Always a good idea, sometimes it works other times is unlucky, always worth a chance especially on the return leg

The words that come to mind here are pinch and salt.
And the kind of pinch one would need to take with a snow shovel. ;)
