  • My mum flies regularly from Australia to the UK, usually alone. She always flies with Emirates and they do this automatically for all females travelling alone where possible, if the flight is full they will always put another female beside a lone one.

Only once did she get a man, they were so embarrassed they moved her to business.

She finds it quite amusing and old fashioned.

That is purely discretionary - I have flown four times with Emirates and always sat next to a man.

All this talk of lone female travellers not being seated next to males leaves me wondering if lone females are viewed by airline staff as sexual predators?

I travel Emirates alone 4 times a year and have had loads of men sit next to me. I have noticed though loads of muslim women on these flights asking for men to be removed from beside them.

If I'm on a long haul flight, I always ask at check-in if the seat next to me can be "blocked" as I'm a female traveling alone.......don't usually have a problem.

I think that is wrong on 2 counts
1, that you should ask for a seat to be "blocked" and 2, that the airline would honour it.

Would you expect the airline to honour the same request for a male?

Why? Being single female are you sexually frustrated and likely to start molesting a man if he comes within five foot of you?

Ah, maybe it's women over a certain age then :D

But that's what they told my mum, although it may have more to do the the huge amount of money they squeeze out of her on a regular basis :rotfl:

Ive noticed the same with orthodox jews coming back from NYC.

I was once on a packed flight going to LHR with BA and the BA flight that left to Gatwick about an hour earlier had been cancelled. So all the gatwick pax got put onto our flight.

Then, a couple of the women were complaining because they had been seated next to men. You could see the poor flight attendants were already stressed because the flight was so full and had a load of passengers asking them about what to do when they reached Heathrow etc, and then these women wanted to move seats with other people!

One man agreed to move, but only because it worked out great for him because he went from a seat next to a woman, to having 3 seats shared with him and 1 other man, so more room. I just think if you are that fussy about public transport dont use it.

I have done the thing where Ive booked a window and an aisle and hoped no one would turn up. Sometimes its worked and when it hasnt and someone else has come along, theyve just sat in the aisle seat and looked pretty pleased they didnt have to sit in the middle anymore!

Or, I ask my nice friend at BA to block the middle seat off if Im flying with them and theres room for her to do that for me :)
  • I know a group of guys that deliberately choose the middle seats if they see that window and aisles have been booked. And they wont offer to swap...lol

The words that come to mind here are pinch and salt.
