whoops - better get my pass certificate sent off!

When I passed in 1966 I was issued with a bit small piece of paper about 3" by 2" which I stuck in the licence book on top of the provisional licence. It then became a full licence.

Just a bit of light relief - I took my test whilst in the army on National Service in the biggest lorry they could find for me, a huge Scammel, the floor of which was head height, crash gear box and weighed in at about 15 tons. They used them to haul tanks out of ditches. My examiner was a crusty old ex Met Police officer who took me around Aldershot. We eventually ended up in a new industrial estate with only the bare roads built. At a dead end I was told to turn back which entailed a 7 point turn! I passed and have always been proud of the fact I've never passed a test in a car. Think yourselves lucky!:T

I actually know someone who passed his test, put the piece of paper behind the clock on the fireplace and forgot all about it. A few months later he was stopped and prosecuted for driving unaccompanied on a provisional licence. The fact that he could prove he had passed his test was irrelevant. Admittedly this was a few years ago now and things might have changed, but I wouldn't bet on it!

So by your view, everyone who drives around on the day of passing their driving test is committing an offence?

Only if they have not applied for their full licence.

For most people nowadays, the application is done at the test centre immediately after the test pass, when they hand over their provisional licence, so it's not an issue. But if they choose not to use that service or aren't eligible (eg: a foreign national??) then until they apply, yes, they are committing an offence.

The references you have quoted will do.
You can produce the licence you have. It's perfectly valid.

Of course it is. As a provisional licence.

You won't be prosecuted for driving without a licence even if you haven't, you'll be prosecuted for not driving in accordance with it.

Absolutely. It's an offence. Which is what I said.

  • A very long time since I passed my test. At that time you COULD drive unaccompanied with a provisional licence and pass certificate but had only a short time time apply for a full licence. Six weeks, I think.

Provisional licenses lasted for one year only then you had to pay £1 for another one (it later went up to £2.

Full licences (green paper ones) cost £5 but covered all future renewal costs (unless there were medical reasons they were not renewed until age 70).

You needed a full licence (not provisional and pass certificate) to accompany an unqualified driver but that was the only requirement so in theory you could pass your test on your 17th birthday, send off for a full licence that day and a week later be accompanying one of your mates.
  • Beyond twenty years or so it doesn't make a lot of difference.

My sister passed her test 3 weeks after I did, back in 1988. She never sent her provisional and test pass off - and then she lost them so couldn't even if she wanted to. I've told her she won't be insured but she says she's passed her test so she's okay. I knew I was right! I don't know how hard it is to send the stuff off. Mine was sent away the same day as I was just so excited to have passed!

Should she have to re-sit to get a full licence now?
