Tilly - I've been waiting till you got home to ask for some help. My food spends are way too high (So high I can't put the figure here for fear of being drummed out of the forum :) )
Can you help me out with some menu planning stuff as I think that might help. Your meals sound great, you clearly love food and I just read that you are doing amazing work writing out food plans so I'm wondering if you had some time to help out please?
Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became

In the event the proverbial hits the fan then co-habitees are better stashing their cash than being mortgage free !!
  • Hi Brizzle, it's really odd as we can't really believe we have done it. Just goes to show how much money we wasted before :o

Watty, I'd be delighted - will PM you.

Please can I have watty's pm too?

perhaps just a list of lovely things I can cook on the cheap? A menu for a week?

Anything that gives me a decent run at it would be lovely.

Gammon in slow cooker today - £11.00. Two cauliflowers for cheesy - new pots - peas.......... by the time we have finished it will be £20 and often there are only two of us!

*Disclaimer because tonight we are 5 - but even so, we spend loads, every day.

  • Crikey, I have an afternoon of DS 6th form school shopping and I come back to this :rotfl:

I have months worth of old menu plans that I could send out - I think I kept all of 2014. Will happily send that out :)

If you can PM a mail address I will send. Won't be today as Mr T has taken our home lap top away with him.

In terms of saving pennies, Jack Monroe is the best place to look. I cook some veggie meals (once or twice a week) but I tend to make dishes that can be used for something else as well. Economy Gastronomy was the first book I found which does similar and JO Saving is based on the same lines.

Having worked full time, circa 60 hours per week on average from when kids were 6 months until just this year, I have had to be really organised. Failing to do this is one of the reasons we ate out so much when they were little. Batch cooking became a life saver.

    Best wishes Tilly x x x

  • Good bargains found for DSs return to school. Trainers for astro turf, mid size school bag, socks, pads of lined paper, ring binders. Thankfully we have loads of bargain shops and they came up trumps with stationery stuff.

All the ironing, washing of towels, dressing gowns etc finished. Mr T comes home late tonight. Lamb tagine simmering at the moment. Will be finished in an hour and I'll heat it up later. Cous cous with chilli flakes and to accompany it.

DS has cut the lawn which will be a lovely surprise for Mr T.

I've also investigated sofa beds for Portugal. We will have a sitting room/study with the TV in and I'd like a couple of sofa beds at some point. I'm thinking grandchildren and all in a room with bathroom close by. OK, I'm a planner I know but I wanted to understand how comfortable they actually are. OK for kids but not adults IMO. I have dreams of family holidays and given how much we laugh together, I'm hoping this happens.

Jobs to do - book haircut, book dentist and hygienist. Book trip to Portugal.

Right, cup of tea time methinks.

The new sofa beds are so much better than they used to be. We sleep on one when we visit my parents and it's great.
