GG questions if I may ( and to any others that own property abroad) do you ever get sick of going to the same place? Do you ever go anywhere else ?

Our family are making decisions just now and one of which is buying abroad ( I spose now would be the time to do it) but we are trying to get. Fuller picture about it all ... And I think that's always best discussed with people who know :)

Mil and fil are working out their options now that we finally have got fil to think about something other than work, he may go back to work yet, but his health has deff given him something else to think about recently, they would need to go somewhere that's warm all year ... Particularly winter a that is what affects their health really badly, but they are trying to decide between buying somewhere or renting long term

Difficult one El as we are all different. There are still places in the world I would like to visit. However, nothing gives me more pleasure than coming back here. It truly feels like home (but with sun, now 27 degrees :p). I know Tilly feels the same about her place. Financially we have lost out, but I would do it again in a heart beat. However, if your in laws are thinking of it I'd suggest they maybe rent somewhere 1st for a while to make sure they are happy.

Off to the roof now to get the storage heaters in my body stocked up before coming back to the cold in a few days

Thanks GG your totally right if course it is different for everyone, just trying to get individual people's feelings regarding the matter :)

We have suggested they rent and this is also on the table for discussion, we would need to set out where they were to live when they were in the UK as well ... One option is in our downstairs which we would convert into a one bed flat for them ... But I'm a bit reticent for that to happen ( as I'm sure you can imagine)

As I say we're just at the brain storming stage so it's good to get other people opinions

    Thanks :)

  • Hi El, if you fall in love with a place, and its affordable, having a place abroad is great. For all of the Tilly family our hearts are in Portugal as well, and in some respects more so than the UK.

We're fortunate to have travelled all over the place and wanted somewhere to call home. We fell in love with the location of our house in Portugal and knew that we had come home :)

GGs suggestion of renting somewhere is a good one. Try before you buy is excellent and certainly allows you to understand whether the beautiful picturesque village is as glorious in high season, or the middle of winter. Also they mustn't underestimate the cold in the winter. It's often a damp cold - nothing like the UK but some form of heating is required.

We still go on holiday to other places but we all think a real holiday is at home in the Algarve :)

Good luck with the discussions. We wouldn't be without our home :T

    Best wishes Tilly

Can I reinforce about the cold in winter. We had central heating installed when we bought and it's been great. I've been out at various times over winter and even when it's warm during the day it gets cold at night. Neighbours without heating end up using the air conditioning, which is drying and dear to run, supplemented with other heaters. And this is in the area with warmest winters.

  • Hello,

I agree about the renting first. A year lease is very affordable, much cheaper than renting in the uk, and you can make an informed decision about buying then. We have friends doing this now and weighing up pros and cons without the worry of whether they will be able to re sell, come home, etc. particularly if house prices take a hike at home, which seems possible.

    All the best,

    Squirrel
Paid off mortgage nine years early in 2013. Now picking and choosing our work to fit in with the rest of our lives!
Still thrifty though, after all these years:D
  • Morning, room finally decorated and finished. About 1 cubic metre worth of rubbish removed, a load of books to sell on Amaz@n, will have to pop by El's diary and ask for instructions as I've never sold this way before.

I cannot tell you the difference it has made - we decorated the study and everything was emptied from the room. Each piece of paper in the filing cabinet has been examined, either ready for burning or refiled if necessary. I have the same feeling as the loft now. Books have been culled, ruthlessly. Bring forward file back in place, with things to do or look forward to. Birthday cards etc have been sorted. We have a desk area to use which works for us and no carp in the room at all.

However, this has meant a humongous amount of stuff is now in the garage so roll on car boot weekend :T

I found some cards from one of my close relatives who died eighteen months ago and that was difficult. One of them is so apt for me, that I am going to frame it and display it on the wall. A way to remember happier times :)

Enjoy your BH Monday and hope the weather is kinder wherever you are.

    Best wishes Tilly x
