didn't use the car. walked up. still survived!it is not always the case of having your vehicle at hand to offload some of the change
i didn't say increase it to £1000 did i? that was you massively exaggerating to try and make your argument look stronger.you are the one saying to increase a float
say you can't accept the 20 then. either take their money without grizzling or politely tell them you're unable to accept the 20 due to limited change.it is inconsiderate when they will deliberately give you a £20 note for a 50p item just so you change the £20 when they already have the correct money for the itemCome on, it's not rocket surgery is it?0 -

Not talking going to bank. if you standing on a market stall with a denim money bag round your waste for 8 hrs no matter how much mioney you have it is heavy by the end of the daysay you can't accept the 20 then. either take their money without grizzling or politely tell them you're unable to accept the 20 due to limited change.
yes do that and some will produce the correct change which really shows they just wanted thre £20 changed ( this is inconsiderate as only doing it to get change). some will come back with the correct change. On markets the only traders that will have large floats are the catering vans.0 -

Just because someone works on a till, doesn't mean that they are a maths wizard!
A few years ago, my mum did some shopping in Kwik-Save (remember them?) She had just popped in there for a couple of bits and only took a fiver out with her, she didn't even take her purse, she just put the note in her coat pocket along with her door keys. When she paid the bill, which was less than £2.00, the till operator gave her change from twenty pounds. My mum, being an honest sort, tried to give the money back, telling the cashier that she had only given her the five pound note. The cashier was quite condescending, telling my mum.."No dear, you definitely gave me a twenty." My mum decided that she'd been honest enough and left with the change.....although she says that she did look over her shoulder as she left, just in case!
And my brother once received over £18 of change from an ice-cream van, he bought 4 ice-creams and paid with a £1 note!
OP, complain long and loud, in writing. The fact that the manager couldn't balance the till twice in less than an hour, speaks volumes about the competency of the staff."I may be many things but not being indiscreet isn't one of them"0 -

you mentioned using the car not me, i was just correcting you.
then politely say no, as i've said. can't have it both ways can you?yes do that and some will produce the correct change which really shows they just wanted thre £20 changed ( this is inconsiderate as only doing it to get change).Come on, it's not rocket surgery is it?0 -
some markets allow your van to be placed behind your stall, which is handy if your moneybag get heavy with changes as you have somewhere to store some of the money to make your bag lighter, but if you dont have you van then you have no where to place any change.you mentioned using the car not me, i was just correcting you.0 -

I'm confused...so if I was going to come and buy something from you, I can't go to the cash machine first because you'd prefer me to have exact change?
I'm presuming you don't have a card machine, and I use my card for everything. I don't ever pay in cash, so I don't carry any. To make a sale to me, you need to either accept card, or be happy to change the note in order for me to buy something.
The market near me has a sign saying to pay with a £20 at least £5 must be spent and for £50 at least £10, this has probably lost them business but it might work for you.
Otherwise, I don't see how people like me can win. We either don't buy, in which case you don't sell, or we use notes, like £20s, which are usually what the cash machine gives.0 -
Elle7 sounds like one of the "inconsiderate people" that texranger is a martyr for taking money off.Come on, it's not rocket surgery is it?0

But if the first 3 or 4 customers of the day used £20 notes and clearing the trader out of his/her float, they may not be able to offer change to the following customers -- so either way loosing business.
Carrying a higher float may be an option, although carries higher risks -- however some day you simply will have a bad run of notes and can still be in the same situation.
The fact they are operating this policy clearly shows it can be a problem for them.
You win some, you loose some as they say0 -

I've only sold at a couple of markets in the past, and each you had to unload before a certain time before parking your vehicle in one of several designated locations.
I can't imagine many traders being happy to carry this extra float money around with them all day, nor would I wish to.0 -

I agree. I was just trying to think of how I could make it easier! No one has seemed too upset by me using notes, at least not to my face
but I wouldn't pay with a note unless I was buying something above their 'limits' anyway - I wouldn't want £19.50 of change, for a start! 0
