• ditto... nearly got done, thank you to everyone posting on here... they used the name Janet Brown, selling gym equipment - got the same story about getting called into work so couldnt collect from her, so she would use her "perks" from work to send it... She couldnt be contacted by mobile due to low signal, but checked emails regularly...

Dont be fooled by these nasty people!!
• As promised here are the emails sent to me

Hi Justin,
Don't know if it's been long since you've emailed, I've been out so couldn't follow up on my text message. Can't promise anything but visiting my mum shortly, wouldn't mind making a drop off :)

If you'll send me your postcode I can check out on my satnav the distance to yours.

Reasonable price and accurate description, it's worth the money, no bad surprises. I won't go any lower.
Can be reached on 07425-620661 low signal strength area :( but check emails regularly.
Ta,
Janet.
P.S. Will let you know before heading out, cash only please.

Of course, nothing goes according to plan :( Unfortunately I've just got called into the office so very busy till next week, hectic lifestyle. However, back at work we have some shipments for large items with parcelforce all week long. Just thought it would save you time and hassle if I'll send it along with them free of charge hihi company benefits :) .

I asked around and it seems you can pay cash upon delivery/inspection. It's quite simple since they're able to wait for you to check it out, if not as described they can just void the shipment with no extra charge.

If that's alright with you I'll need a name, address, contact number and also date&time suitable for the delivery.
Second option - if you want to pop in and collect you'll have to wait till next week or so when hopefully I'll get my head around.
Let me know either way. No need to worry If my reply is delayed since I'm just having fun working long hours ... or not :))
Janet.

Great, I've just finished filling out the forms online and scheduled the delivery for Saturday am, 9-10am ( at your end). The courier company will also handle the payment. If you'll accept and sign for the parcel the driver will then leave you a receipt and bac's me afterwards. They sent out an email notification on how to proceed. Did you received it ? Check your spam or junk folder as well, maybe it got caught in there.

Let me know if you have any queries, I'll be glad to help out!

Best wishes for a happy New Year!

• So glad I stumbled across this thread when googling the UKASH vouchers just before I bought one to pay JANET BROWN £200 for a chainsaw from gumtree!!! The emails were EXACTLY the same as below! Can't tell you how happy I am that I saw this before getting scammed :o)
• So a masive thank you for everyone commenting on this thread you have just saved me £190. I messaged a Janet Brown about 'French Country Furniture' this was a dresser, wardobe, 2 side tables attached to a head board vintage furniture i deseprately wanted and knew for one of these on ebay would be very expensive even though second hand. I responded to the ad along with my mobile number as requested and recieved a text message from janetsiph i tried to reply but this didnt work. i didn't find this strange how niave of me. So i recived an email

'Hi Georgie, dont know if it's been long since you've emailed, i've been out so couldn't follow up on my text message. Can't promise anything but visiting my mum shortly, wouldn't mind making a drop off' so on a so forth. DeJaVu anyone.

so i email back then i get the email stating she's been really busy and called into work but to save us both time they have a parcel force for large shipments and can send through her work perks of the company ;-) free of charge to me.

The only thing i found suspicious was when i received the email from Parcel force stating i should go to my local corner shop, newagent and speak to the shop keeper. why not use normal terminology i.e. employee etc and the fact they wanted me to scan or send them the voucher number before they would deliver. I googled UKASH vouchers with parcel force and this thread came up... bloody good job. i feel relieved i looked into it. Her name was Janet Brown janet78brown@gmail.com when i went to check the furniture has been taken off i can only assume that someone else reported it before i had the chance.

i have had 2 future emails since asking me if i have recived their email i am just ignoring her emails but i am concerned that i did hand over my address and contact number, Luckily not my actual full first name. Can they then use your details to obtain credit etc?

once again thank you soo much and keep up the good work :-)

• This scam is being used by doris-miller6@yahoo.com on the freecycle sites the system she uses is the same and she uses or tries to use UKASH, I have had experience of this thankfully I had a *gut* feeling all was not as it should be so insisted payment for delivery was made via paypal....it was a scam and I was lucky I got my money back seems the one thing we should all be wary of is UKASH and if it sounds too good to be true it probably is!
• I was robbed and fell for the Janet87brown scam last week- loosing £265 as I sent the photo copy of the PAYPOINT receipt.
So Janet or who ever is probably looking at this - I actually hope you get what you deserve and it's not nice to say on here what I hope will happen to you.
Fraud team are aware BUT I think gumtree are also to blame as they have let this email be used many times and still people are getting robbed.
Does any one know how to claim money back from gumtree for allowing this to go on?

Hi Talla13, so sorry to hear you were scammed recently. See post #489 (Pg 25), where there is a summary of other posts that may help spotting, reporting and getting compensation.

Your comment “I think gumtree are also to blame as they have let this email be used” is key to why this scam has been so “successful” by scammers on Gumtree. The scammers do NOT store their scam email address on Gumtree. Instead they ask/wait for buyer to submit them their mobile, then start communicating by text… and then pass on their scam email address via text.

This process circumvents Gumtree’s secure email system… and as most “modern” buyers don’t think twice about “not” actually speaking to a private ad seller… the scam unfolds by txt and email outside of Gumtree’s email system.

I do not know why our (European) Police forces/fraud agencies seem unable to work together to disable email addresses proven to be used for money laundering or fraud purposes. Is this a case of poor international laws, or Google email being above the law?

Or is it that Google is just too powerful to be reckoned with now? GTK
