Probably already has Norton or McAfee installed if you have run the Factory Restore.

When you Factory Restore, the three months probably begins again.

    Finish the Updates.

Then you can remove McAfee(McAfee Removal) if you wish and then install Avast(No need to install the bundled Google Chrome or to let it take over your Home Page. So remove the relevant ticks).

Ok and malwarebytes? I presume now, I hope laptop is now ok? Could I have gone wrong?

Just looked at mcfee and it seems to be up and running, but will get rid later.

No way for you to have gone wrong. Just keeping installing the Updates, rebooting when requested and then going back to Windows Updates to to check again.
