I work in an accounts office collecting rents - I can not tell you the number of people who dont know the difference between a standing order & direct debit. We are only allowed to deal with standing orders.

Now I understand that Joe Bloggs on the street may not be aware but how can you run a business & not know??!

The times I have had people ringing up screaming "youve taken money out of my account"!!!!! Or the rent has increased & they blame my company for not taking it out of their account & say it is our fault.

If i had a penny for every time ...............sigh!!
    NEVER ASSUME!

I work for a publishing company, and for my sins, a lot of people send us their lovely stories (sigh). We insist that they send a stamped addressed envelope because otherwise we won't reply. It is truly scary how many Americans send us stamped addressed envelopes - with US stamps on them...
To do the job properly they need to send you an "International Reply Coupon" which you can exchange for stamps at a post-office.
What part of "A whop bop-a-lu a whop bam boo" don't you understand?

You try working in consumer advice and being told 'you are wrong' numerous times a day. Why bother phoning up if you're not going to listen to what I tell you?! And then they wonder why Currys aren't doing anything to help them.

The 'bloke in the pub' that was mentioned obviously does know more about your rights than me who has had full training and done the job for 2 years.

I know exactly what you mean. The number of people that have asked me a question today and then will not listen to the answer as its not what they want to hear. I could have quite happly handled him my letter of resignation today!!

oooer! dont get me started. i work on a whitegoods helpdesk in a call centre. (this makes me both fearful but strangely patient when calling a call centre myself. lol.)
the classic call starts with a complaint about the long winded and patronising push button method of getting through...so the tone of the conversation is set.
"my new washing machine is broke, its jumping around the kitchen making a terrible noise."
im sorry to hear that madam, can i just ask..did you remove all the transit bolts from the back of the appliance?
    " nooo!"
then direct them to the installation instructions in the handbook...talking them through the process..... just dont have the heart to mention that they may have caused irreparable damage to their appliance.
one that pulls at the heartstrings though is the elderly lady of 85 whose generous relative has purchased a state of the art latest model with digital settings and multiple options....far too complicated for her needs. :(

God, you've just given me frightening flashbacks to Parent's Open Evenings and talking to teachers, a lot of who seemed totally at odds with life as the rest of us know it.............aarrgghh!!!

Funnily enough, whenever I deal with call centres, I always end up thinking the person at the other end would get eaten alive in a classroom, even if there was a script on a screen to follow!

LOL i used to love those calls, Usually dealt with by saying "well now that you've got here how can i help you?" or by asking for their details so you can log their complaint about the call steering, rattling a few buttons on the keyboard so it sounds like you're doing something then thanking them for their call and ending the call before they've realised they've forgotten what they originally called for :)
