Are people generally stupid without realising it?

I don't think the general public are always stupid......often, the percived "stupidity" is induced by the tranxs we have to take after having to speak to a 'numb-nuts' on a help-line (which never can help), or a shop assistant that cannot add two simple figures and reach the correct total, or querying a bill (which usually transpires to be their error, but "it's the computer, you see"), or asking in a DIY shop a reasonably simple question and getting a grinning '12 year old' in a jumpsuit grinning in a confused and inane way because no one has explained what a screwdriver is........and then, of course, we have to do our instant linguistic transition and learn to speak to those for whom English will never be a 1st, 2nd or even 3rd learned language for them.
Having survived all that, we do the weekly tango with a trolley whose wheels wobble, stop, grate and finally buckle.......
We can them go to the fun shops, where we, in our enthusiasm to spend over £1000 hunt round the shop pleading for someone to sell us that lovely HD ready TV we've seen.;)
The days in can be fun - we look yonder, in vain, for delivery drivers/tradesmen/workmen who have sworn (hand on 'eart, guv), to turn up if only we will sit and listen for them between the hours of 6am and midnight. When they fail to arrive, it's the M25 to blame........;)
Stupid?
Yes, we are..........only because of the crap level of service we put up with.
LinYou can tell a lot about a woman by her hands..........for instance, if they are placed around your throat, she's probably slightly upset.0 -
I think it's a combination of very clever advertising by companies and people hearing what they want to hear. Over the past few years we've seemed to move towards a culture where many want something for nothing - either companies trying to screw customers with offers that can be construed as misleading* and customers thinking they can put one over the company.
There's a more adversarial climate with everyone knowing 'their rights' and (maybe it's just me on this) a lot more who gain all their legal knowledge from 'someone in the pub' rather than trying to find out for themselves what the true position really is.

Well thanks for cheering me up on a freezing cold morning when I cant be bothered to light my fire. I can't quite believe this thread got started let alone some of the comments. Sooo funny, I'd like to think I was in the clever half although I do notice my dumb blonde days, but people like jade goody and even my sister definitley fall into the generally stupid group and my sister definitely doesn't realise she's stupid, she agreed with Jades questioning on eskimos!!!!!0

What can you expect when we live in a country which must be the laughing stock of the world with the stupid levels of political correctness we embrace.
Recently I read of several hundred people who are in jail for various offences and who have successfully claimed thousands of pounds each for the trauma of having to go cold turkey when they had their drugs taken from them.
I know of a young, unmarried couple who battered their baby at 6 weeks old (broke limbs and swung her at the doorframe by her legs). They were both jailed, for a matter of months only. Whilst in jail, the man was beaten up by other prisoners who disliked what he was in for. He claimed and won several thousand pounds for his trauma
The courts are letting people go free after they have committed crimes because ther's no room in the jails for them. Yobs are allowed to terrorize people in their own homes (often old and/or disabled people) and though they ring the police either no-one answers the phone or they "haven't an officer available at the moment".
The list goes on and on. Society is falling apart at the seams and the Government just keeps making up new laws which are often too daft to laugh at. Who stupidly voted them in, and not just once? Not me, thank goodness, but we're all suffering!!
Right, down off my soap-box now and on with the housework, lol.I let my mind wander and it never came back!0 -

50% of the population are not necessarily of above average intelligence.
I think the small number of MSE users are so much smarter than the rest of the population that it pulls the average up, with only a few people in comparison to the "rest of them".
The comment above about people for whom English will never be their first language is most applicable to slack jawed chavs working in our nation's shops, if you ask me.Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen nineteen and six, result happiness. Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pounds ought and six, result misery0 -

depends on whether you are using a mean, median or modal average doesn't it, using median 50% are below average and 50% above if the sample is an even number (the mid point therefore falls on a space). The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

When I am at university, I often wonder how so many people actually got a place. in the second year, half of the students still can't find their way round the campus, about a third can't string a sentence together and virtually all of them have the extremely annoying habit of saying "inni" every other freakin' word.
Oh and to top it all, one of them asked recently how many letter K's were in the word escalator. I've just spelt that wrong haven't I??!!Don't bother trying to sue me - I've got no money!0
