The Post Office has done a very good job of convincing people that they offer a good deal for changing foreign currency - largely by relentlessly using the totally meaningless phrase "commission free". A lot of people are totally convinced that they will be ripped off if they use their bank cards abroad, when actually for many of them it would be cheaper than changing money at the PO.
Yes, the amount of times people have asked me "you travel a lot, where do you change your money?" and are completely stunned when I say I haven't changed currency for about 10 years, I just withdraw cash using ATMs abroad.
Then the convincing them that changing currency "commission free" is actually more expensive than using a bank ATM card even with a 2.75% charge, then the usual "but what if you can't find an ATM", "what if all the ATMs are down", "what if your bank blocks the card"... all of which there are easy answers to.
But they still end up going to the PO and getting ripped off. I've given up - I think I'll just tell them to go the PO next time....:p0 -
My local PO was offering 1.14 for the euro which I think Was one of the top on Mse.

I think the rate varies quite a bit PO to PO. Also they do sterling travellers cheques at 0.75% which is quite good too.0 -

eBay is not bad if you handle the € often. Ideally "cash on collection".0

Not bothering with using the post office next month for my day tip, probably change up about £50 on the wayover as got some leftover euros anyway.
I have used the post office before, but that was more for convience than anything else living where I do.The Very Right Honourable Lady Tarry of the Alphabetty thread-I just love finding bargains and saving moneyI love to travel as much as I can when I canLife has a way to test you, it's how you deal with this that matters0 -

Yes it seems they do occasionally have good deals...0 -

So something can only be a rip-off if you're forced to buy it :rotfl:
That would mean hardly anything is a rip-off.0 -
The rate at which banks and the Post Office buy foreign currency is lower than the rate at which it sells foreign currency. The difference between the two rates varies, but it is larger when changing cash. For this reason I simply withdraw the cash I need from my current account with my debit when I arrive in "Euroland".0
