Which phone? 8800 scirocco or N73?
Upgrade time! I know the ultimate MSE advice would be to haggle with my current provider but I like shiny things that go beep!
Until today I was more or less choosing between a N73 and K800 but when I was walking through town I saw the local voda shop offering any phone on any tarrif. Went in for a chat and I could apparently get the Nokia 8800 scirocco edition for free on anything from £20 up. Given this thing is at least £200 on most other £30 contracts, it seems to be a bit of a bargain. Seems to be a nice phone but is noticeably less whizz-bang than most newer handsets.
Has anyone got an 8800? If so, would you recommend it. I do mainly plan to make calls / texts but was tempted by the N73 on 3 with MSN / Skype etc. Ultimately it will just be a stop-gap till I can get an iphone.
Appreciate any comments people have.

hi there. ok don't get either..... the k800i is better than both of them.
i don't use any of these and have a nokia 6230i at the mo, but the n73 is a bit slow when navigating the menu and the battery life on the 8800 is very poor....
i should mention that i work for the Carphone Warehouse.
hope this helps

As above, the K800i and the N73 are similar. Out of those I would pick the K800i.
Stay clear of the 8800's they are just 6230i's with a shiny case. A basic spec.
K800i all the way. Smile, you only get one life, LIVE IT.0 -
I'm tempted by the X-series thing on 3 though as it includes messenger, skype and some internet services (Gmail I think). Only available on the N73 at the mo. Anyone used this? Is it any good?

Before you get a N73 especially on 3UK read the posts on the Nokia Discussions Forum, 3G forum and AllaboutSymbian forum. There is a Bluetooth and memory card issue with the 3UK firmware and the latest I have been told from 3UK is that an upgrade will be brought out at the earliest of the end of May 2007. The bluetooth issue etc is a known issue with the V2 firmware (all network providers and generic) although they have now been able to get a Nokia update. You can update a 3 N73 to the latest firmware but this method is illegal and invalidates both your Network Provider and Nokia's warranties.
I have posted quite a bit about this issue and my dealings with 3UK on the above forums. My nickname is the same as on here so just do a search.

That was in our local voda shop. Just seemed to be a walk-in type deal. Not sure if this is nationwide or local.
Cheers

Yes it is legal to upgrade on the Nokia website. The illegal bit is when people use software to change the phone's product code (different variants and regions have different codes) in order to be able to upgrade their phone via the Nokia Update Service on the Nokia website.
Basically if the Nokia website has an update available for your particular phone- all is good. Else if the Nokia Update says 'no update available' and you choose not to wait for an update release for your phone as the phone has a different product code to the firmware version that has been released and made available, but set about going the route of changing their product code via a software program in order to update via the Nokia Website then this invalidates both the Network Provider's and Nokia's warranties. If you 'brick' the phone you are not covered as repair centres can see your product code under the battery and can check what firmware is available for your phone. However later on if a higher firmware gets released for you p' code and you update to this so then you should theoretically be fine with your warranties.0 -

Anyone else seen this Nokia 8800 Scirocco offer in their local Vodafone store?
I find that this offer is too good to be true.
A free 8800 Scirocco on a £20+ per month contract??????
If it is availale I will be getting one.
As for which phone is better..... I cant believe the advice being offered.
The K800i is a chavs phone. Every tom !!!!!! and harry has one.
Choosing a K800 over a 8800 Scirocco is like choosing a Ford Mondeo over a Ferrari F430. Sure the ford can carry more of your food shopping and sure the Ford can carry more of your friends with you but who gives a monkeys, the 8800 Scirocco is probably by far the only phone out their that is worth owning until the apple iphone appears.0
