  • I understand that, because the employers might not like the OP for any number of reasons, or could find that they have decided to fill internally etc.

I was responding to the posts that said that as a volunteer he could take as many breaks as he wants. I am guessing he is under instruction from the Jobcentre & by taking extra breaks he could lose benefit entitlement. (As not following rules etc?)

Again this is all guessing /presumtions, he may well have just decided to offer his services for free to somewhere.

No if he is on the Work Programme which I think the OP is there doesn't even have to be a job where you are working, full stop. It's called a work placement, not a job.

So I did my first day on the job without pay - voluntary for about 4 weeks. But, the boss is a slave-driver for sure and doesn't allow his staff a lunch hour. The women who work there are allowed to stand at the till drinking a cup of tea and eating a piece of toast. But only once. I cannot cope with their 'banter' and sexual innuendo.

Me? I need a meal. I need to sit down to a meal. I'm not on the till, but I'm doing all the graft like bringing in the delivery, moving metal shelves and stuff. Hard work and certainly not worth minimum wage in my opinion. The women might not need to eat, but I do. I need to keep my energy levels up, especially if I intend to go to the gym afterwards.

I just feel that I'm being exploited.

Should I really be working for a company which doesn't respect its staff?

If the OP is too unaware of their situation to wangle a nice charity shop or office voluntary post as their "[STRIKE]workfare[/STRIKE]" work placement and ended up in a 99p sweatshop - hell mend them it serves them right.

    What deseise do you have?

if have have none then you talking sh*t. Blood sugars will not drop too low over a 5 hour period if you eat properly before and after.

if you HAVE a deseise then spell ot which one. That may make a difference. You would need a doctors note explaining the issue and your needs. if the employer is happy to abide by this then fine - if hes not ne may let you go. At this point you can choose whether to take him to tribunal as he sacked you (effectively) due to a medical complaint.

Ultimately though - IF hes prepared to give you leeway for a medical condition it will be the minumum he needs. that will NOT be an hour - paid - so you can cook, sit and eat a hot meal. It will be 20-30 mins unpaid so you can eat a pre-prepared meal you have brought in.

I think you'll find it is you talking !!!!!!. Blood sugar can drop long before 5 hours. I do not have any disease but my blood sugar drops and I get pale, shaky, vomit, bad headache. My Dr says it is pretty common and you should not really go more than about 3 hours without eating something

So if blood sugar is the only thing you have to correct. In a 5 hour shift a quick mars bar or something similar will raise sugar levels temporarily. If you keep them in your pocket you can drink them instead of wasting energy chewing as well. Always helping, I am.

If you eat the right stuff, you will last longer without needing to eat. Though exercise will shorten that time.

Unfortunately I think a lot of work places are like this now, especially retail ones
