The point I was making is that it would highly likely be quite a regular event for some of us to feel ill like that if we didnt eat meals at regular intervals.
i get your point however:
1. How long do you think it takes a body to digest food enough to provide the energy? its not a quick process. you wont start to get the befefits for at least an hour, most likely longer - unless its got quickly absorably foodstuffs - like glucose etc.
2. the point IM trying to make is a healthy body can survive much lionger than 5 hours doing heavy labour without sustinance (appart from water) provided a proper meal is eated the night before, and a propper breakfast with slow release energy is eated prior to that work. If your body - or anybodys body - cant do that then it either hasnt been fed properly, its been "compromised" by (for instance) too much physical exertion the night before (3 hours in a gym, 10 mile run etc) - or something else such as too little sleep or saturated with alcohol.
If it IS receiving such treatment then thats hardly the employers issue - and if it IST but your stull suffering then you have an underlying health issue - be that a "bug" (a little bit of a cold or the like(, or something more permanant to you such as diabetes and such. In this case you should consult a Dr and get it diagnosed.0 -
This has to be a wind up, surely? either that or someone looking to use this as an excuse to leave his job?
OP, you have to look at the real life point of view here - much of which, no, isn't fair - you have got voluntary work, presumably so you can get perm work which let's face it, is really hard to find these days. At least you're working in some capacity. Secondly, it's really hard graft. Any job you do will have this, especially these days when employers want more and more for the buck they pay you. It isn't fair BUT it's real life, and frankly, if you want to work, you have two choices, either get on with it and stop moaning or leave and try desperately like the millions of others to try to find something.
I also suffer from low blood sugars and depending on how I feel on the day, I carry around pieces of fruit like an orange, apple, pear and also some rice cakes etc which I keep in my bag. No one can stop you from having a toilet break so why not dip into your bag at a 'low' moment and grab a quick bite? You shouldn't worry what happens to your colleagues just yourself so don't bring them into it.
Really, it's so simple but it seems like you're making it into a huge deal and I think this is what it getting to people on here. If you want to stay, deal with it, grab a quick bite, and ignore what you don't like; if you don't then leave.0 -

If the shop doesn't have breaks or allow you to get a drink etc. Why do they have a kitchen, kettle, toaster, bread, etc etc.
Erm, because it's a load of old b0llocks. Because, he isn't employed and can take a break as and when he wants; as he can't be sacked. If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0 -
Who would want to work with colleagues like the women in his place of work they are sitting stuffing their faces at the tills and not having the good manager to offer him a piece of toast. How mean and rude can some people get....0

They probably assume that as an adult, he can get his own toast, or realise that as his shift finishes at 1, he will be eating his lunch then.If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0 -

im in the Army - and on ops you often work that long in a MUCH harder physical environment than you with little or no food - and for days on end !!!
I may be late to this - and have only got to page 2 but the OP is comming accross to me as someone who WANTS something not NEEDS it. it seems hes never tried !!
Ultimately IF you work an 8 hour shift you are ENTITLED to a break - be it only 20 mins. You need to pack something you can eat in that time that will replanish you energy levels - simple. Its the law and on a phisiological level perfectly possible, providing you eat a breakfast of the right type before yor shift and a propper mean after.
What you need to do the gym thing isnt the employers responsibility to give you. If at the end of a LEGAL working day with theLEGAL breaks your too exausted to go to the gym - tough. go later and rep[lanish your energy before hand.
IF the employer breaks the law by not giving you your entitled breaks then fine - bring it up. If you get sacked take him to tribunal, and if he refuses to give the break then report him. However you cant force him to give you the breaks you THINK you need to eat properly. he only has to give you the legal minimum.
The OP really needs to come to terms with what is LEGAL, what (physiologically) his body NEEDS and what he THINKS it needs. Also to come to terms with the fact wroking can be physically tough - and he may not have the energy to go to the gym after - tough. thats life. if your that exausted after work you probably dont need to go to the gym anyway.
Thanks for talking some sense, I cannot believe that so called healthy person finds it impossible to work for 5 hours without a sit down meal. I would suggest that such whiners look at what troops manage to achieve on irregular meals and hard work in hostile environments without collapsing due to "reduced blood sugars" or whatever.0 -

i'm not sure what you read in my post for that reply, so I'll just nod politely.0 -

His colleague would have known that he was not been paid for his work so why not show a bit kindness that cost nothing and creates a much better working environment.:cool:0 -
An employer told a friend of mind that she could not leave the floor to use the toilets until she first locate a manager and got permission. After she found a manager on a large shop floor she would have had to cross a large shop floor area to get to a slow lift to take her up to three floor above her floor to get to the toilets that’s if she was not stopped by a customer before she got to the lifts and she would have to help the customer before she could proceed to the lifts, as it would be a dismissal if she would not first deal with the customer.
Poor thing she had a bladder problem and it was hell for her she ended up wearing pads just in case she could not get a manager or make it to the toilets in time.
Also as for a drink of water it was hell aslo in the summer time, as there was not water for employee available on her floor and as it was warm as this was double warm compared to outside due to the strong lights on in her store especially around the counter area. She was once told to buy bottle water from the store and drink it in her break time
.
I wonder what this employer would have done if your friend had had IBS or something similar.
A lot of these employers probably have pets like cats or dogs.
They wouldnt expect their pets to pee and crap to order so why are employees (human beings) expected to.0 -
Well, I see thread continues - but thank goodness is becoming less interesting.
I cannot believe that posters are still actually aiming sometimes vituperative) responses to the OP, who I Imagine is long gone.
I wonder if, unlucky (and before anyone says so, soooo unlikley) enough to end up in similar circumstances, you would find yourself as likely to simply "suck it up" - I do not believe anyone who says that they would. It is has degenerated into patronising at best and outright bull**** at worst.0
