how old are you and what's your driving / insurance history like? my 850 T5 (2.3 petrol turbo) is only £3500 -

Well I had a Bravo HGT which was a superb car. I agree with your comment about the 5 door Stilo though, the 3 door looks a lot better. With your driving history though, I think your insurance is going to be a problem for anything over a 1.3ltr.PLEASE NOTEMy advice should be used as guidance only. Had a quote of £1200 for a 2002 Focus, or £1455 Mondeo 2.0 Zetec (Tesco). A lot better than the £4000+ quote from Aviva!0

Can get a 6 year old Chevvy Lacetti 1.6, with alloys, aircon 50k-70k miles for around 1500. Should be reliable, unlike a £1000 fiat (talking from experience!) Insurance shouldn't be a problem, as no one will want to nick it.
Daewoo made the older model if you want to save a bit of cash, their later stuff was pretty well screwed together, if a bit boring to drive. Kalos is a smaller version, but comes in 5 door flavours with alloys.0 -
Mk IV VW Golf
Mk I Seat Leon
Mk I Skoda Octavia
All available with 1.6 engines (make sure you get a 16V version, not the earlier 8V)
All the same car underneath and all very reliable.0 -
I have a 53 reg black 1.9tdi octavia estate with 147K miles 2 owners, me and my dad, that I am selling for £1500....but am down south.
I would suggest you run a few quotes as this one is a group 9 insurance so cheapish, with £110 a year road rent and £0.12 per mile to run its the most economical car I have had!"Dream World" by The B Sharps....describes a lot of the posts in the Loans and Mortgage sections !!!0 -
Thanks again for the comments. Ran another insurance quote and think it's a toss up between the Leon and S40. Golf's are coming out pretty pricey for age I'd like or very high milage, plus parts etc are more expensive. Won't be buying until end of next month so plenty time to scour and do more research and them. Will look to buy from a trader though to get some warranty on it.0

I've had a 1.6 Leon for 2 years and it's been fantastic. You should be able to get one with about 80k on the clock for £1500.
Just make sure it's an 02 reg or later if you are looking at the 1.4 or 1.6 - there was a gearbox issue with the early ones (same applies to Golfs, Octavias and Audi A3's)
All but the earliest 1.4 Leons come with alloys.0 -
1.4 only going to be £1090 on insurance, based on what you've said and what I've read I'll definately getting at least a 2002 model.0
