Car for £1.5k or less

In the process of looking for a car, my requirements are;
Hatchbatch or saloon
10 year old max
Prefer 4/5 doors
1.6 petrol or 1.8-2.0 diesel
Alloys (being picky)
Will be doing a lot of motorway miles so prefer something like a Mondeo over the Focus as I'll get a lot more for my £. Any cars I should be looking at other than the Mondeo?
Thanks for any replies!
Ps - I'm in Wolverhampton.
Pps - needs to be as "bulletproof" as possible as I know sweet fa about running cars other than Ford parts are one of the cheapest!

You should be able to pick up a Volvo S40 or S70 with full leather interior, air con, alloys etc for that budget. As unfashionable as they are they do impress me, I've had two cheap 850's and they're comfortable as anything and bullet proof as long as they're look after.
The 2.5TDi gives pretty impressive MPG as well. I was looking at a V70 earlier in the year and the fuel consumption was coming back at around 55mpg.0 -
Dont worry about alloys, even if the car doesn't have them you can often get original fitment alloys quite cheaply via ebay etc.
I'd be thinking along the lines of a Rover 45 Diesel...Proud of who, and what, I am. :female::male::cool:0 -
i'd go for a golf tdi....... excellent cars, good mpg..As Sceptic Peg predicts, House prices this week will be going up!.............................or down.0

Fixed that for you. In all seriousness I'd consider a Volvo, they are a good solid car.scheming_gypsy wrote: »You should be able to pick up a Volvo S40 or S70 with full leather interior, air con, alloys etc for that and still have some money left over for a tweed jacket, a pipe and a copy of the Sporting Post.
And I'd leave the Rover. They went bust for a good reason.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
You need the tweed jacket, the heating always goes on the driver's seat 1st and that leather is chilly on a winter morning.
I drive a V70 and have no complaints so far.The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

And I'd leave the Rover. They went bust for a good reason.
The reason was that people thought they were unreliable due to the head gasket failures of the later K series petrol engines, which then tarnished the image of the company as a whole. I personally don't think that the reputation they developed is entirely deserved, but the diesel engine used in the 45 was a Honda derived unit (or might have been BMW?) and has not got any real regular faults.
The image that the company earned though means that it is very possible to pick up a very good car for peanuts.Proud of who, and what, I am. :female::male::cool:0 -

Crikey, are you serious, I quite like those Volvos, they are well kitted out.0 -
The s70 2.5TDi I mentioned further up went for about £745. Not sure what reg it was though but Volvo's don't hold their value that well for some strange reason.0
