How can I also restore the back up partition - with a copy of the OS ?
What format would this be in ?
From what I recall - it was not an exe file or an ISO file ?

If you have overwritten it, you cannot.

It matters little anyway, as you can create your own recovery discs.
The Drivers and Utilities are on the HP website. You can download, unzip them and burn them to disc.
So together with the Windows 7 disc in my link and the Drivers and Utilities on the HP website, you will have a Recovery Solution.
Another option, once you have complete the install, is to use backup or imaging software to create a recovery solution.

you don't need a restore partition (you said you have already deleted it?),
in the future just use the DVD you have just burnt and activate it with the licence key.

OK - I spent almost 6 hours downloading SP1, used IMGburn and tried to install it - guess what ?
Key Code not acccepted - I did double check the characters (which went in to the boxes ok)
Could the reason be - that my original (OEM) code was not for SP1 ?
Is it worth my downloading the first (original) download ?
Or should I return to Ubuntu ?

No the SP1 won't have made a difference, are you sure the Windows7 iso that you've downloaded/installed isn't a retail version? Because an OEM key won't activate a retail disc and vice versa.

If it doesn't accept the code then you need to do a phone activation as mentioned before, using the original OEM code. That should resolve your issue.

You don't need to enter the key code. Just install it without entering the Product Key.

I don't want to get pestered by the ILLEGAL INSTALLATION messages - and anyway - How long will the laptop boot for - if I don't register ?

Why should I have to risk my laptop not booting up ?
I have a legal copy of Windows - that refuses to install properly and since it is HP - ie OEM - There is no support offered by MS ....
