Tesco Mobile - £580 Data charges - Help!
I am signed up to tescos mobile £10 a month "unlimited" data, unlimited text, 300 minute tarif.
About 2 months ago i received a text to say i am near my data limit any calls over the 1gb limit will be charged at £4 per mb. So I call customer services and ask if they can restrict my tariff so I cant go over the 1gb limit. Sorry sir we cant place a restriction on this tariff. Ok fair enough i turned off my 3g and waited until the next month.
This weekend I receive a text 'youve spent more than your current pay monthly tariff allows & and your service was suspended.
Sunday i call customer services .. closed
Saturday i call .. sorry you need to wait 5 hours for the details to show
Monday .. I find out my data usage exceeded my limit of 1gb and I have been charged £580!!!! I made a complaint and the guy said he woud pass the ticket to his account manager and call me back on weds 11th nov.
Weds 11th .. No phone calls all day, so i phone tesco to find that the guy assigned to call me only works part time and is only in certain days. So the tesco guy explains that a note has been left and the 580 has been reduced by 50%. I explained I was not happy to pay anything, but was told that the account managers decision is final. If I do not pay the bill after 2 letters of warning they will pass the bill on to a baliff.
When I asked why the data wasnt cut off after i hit the limit he explained that all the data was downloaded in a single session and that their system only updates every 5 hours.
When I asked why i didnt receive a warning text, he gave the same answer. All the data was used up in a short space of time so a text couldnt be sent.
Why is it my fault that tesco mobile cannot restrict my tariff from going over the 1gb limit! How am i supposed to know if i dont get a text warning! Why have I been allowed to go £580 over my limit, why is it not restricted to £10 or £20
My past 12 bills have been £10 surely they can see that this is a one off!
I am so mad I feel I am getting robbed!
I would love to pass this onto watchdog! I hope this deters anyone else from signing up to a tesco mobile contract. If anyone has any advice please let me know. p.s to make things worse I am away until Dec so they will probably take the money from my account as I wont be arround to stop it! Rant over!!

Actually, they can cap your tariff, as long as you are not within contract. Perhaps your particular tariff is excluded.0 -
You used it, you pay for it.
You had a txt saying you were near your limit, but obviously you chose to ignore it. Not Tesco's fault.
You should have accepted their goodwill of 50% off.0 -
Even with 3G off, the phone still downloads over 2G data connectionsSquirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
Now 20% cooler0 -
You used the data, they reduced the bill by 50%
Why should they take responsibility for your inability control your data usage on your phone ? All phones can tell you how much data has been uploaded and downloaded. All you need to do is look in the right place - this can usually be found by reading the manual, if you are not very handy with the phone.
And at £10 per month spend, they are hardly going to lose their top customer if you get annoyed and change networks.0 -
Did you use the data? If you feel you didn't, then ask for an itemised bill and show them proof you didn't.
If you did I honestly can't see how you feel robbed, you use it, you pay for it. As with all contracts. They said they can't cap it, you knew this. So it's up to you to keep an eye on your data, not tesco. They are a business, there to make themselves money, not save you money.
It's harsh, but true sadly.Sigless0 -

This is my point! 2 months ago i received a text to warn me.. fair enough. and i turned off 3g.
This time I get a text to say i have been cut off. NO WARNING TEXT!
I can only think my wifi cut off over night and started using 3g, i wasnt even aware as all the data downloaded in the space of a couple of hours!0 -

I agree it was my phone that downloaded the data, unknown to me, but why should i be punished because tesco dont restrict the tariff to only download up to the 1gb limit. What about parents with kids etc why should they be charged so much!0 -
145MB in 5 hours with 3G turned off? I would be surprised if this was even possible.
And they say it was all in one session?
Do you disagree with this OP? You seem to be upset about the lack of warning rather than disputing that you used this data. What could your phone have downloaded in this time?0 -

Yep, I cant really dispute that it was my phone that downloaded the data. I was just unaware of it! I can only think it was when I increased the amount of emails my account stores. Possibly my wifi router stopped and 3g took over. My usage is rarely over 200 mb a month so i must have downloaded more like 1.5 - 1.8 gb all in one session!!
No warning, not even a late text. Also annoyed as i called two months before to ask if they can stop me from downloading over the 1gb allowance only to be told no. I have since called and been informed that this is now possible! I expect this is because of people like me complaining!
I have been recommended giffgaff for £10 a month truly unlimited internet, so will be looking into this asap.0 -
This why mobile company's do cheap tariffs knowing there's always someone that will go over there data allowance
They are not going to cap people because then you will not go over your limit
If you look on this forum nearly everyday someone is complaining about being over charged for the data use or roaming costs
With the amount of people complaining about data and roaming use you would have thought the watchdog or government would look into it.
Yes GiffGaff is truly unlimited data.......£10 giftbag gives you 250mins, unlimited text, unlimited data, free calls gg to gg also runs on O2 network
