sainsburys pricing tends to be all over the place - sometimes on the reduced stuff, they still take into account any offer the product was on as well, then other times, they dont - really makes it hit and miss

yesterday, i bought some ready made curry/rice there - were orginally £2.99 each (who pays that price?), reduced to 99p each, and at the full price were also on a buy 2 for £5 offer (98p saving), so i ended up getting two for 99p - that sounds more like my price range

I asked an assistant today why the "reduced" chiller shelf was bare the last few times I've been in, and was told they aren't allowed to put the reductions out until noon nowadays.

I just wondered whether this was general, or just in our branch. Bit of a nuisance as I generally shop in the mornings. Can't really understand what the reason for it might be, either. :(

To try and sell as much as poss at full price, thus more profits ;)

I find their reductions are nowhere near as good as Tesco either, Tesco regularly reduce their bread to 10p or 20p a loaf but the cheapest in Sainsburys was 39p for a small loaf.

Safeway used to be even worse, they'd wait till the last minute and the reductions weren't generous. Even if it was a pack of 8 yogurts they wouldn't reduce it till the end of the sell by date. Unless you've got a huge family you can't get through all that yogurt! That was my experience in my local branch anyway.

There's a new Tesco opening near here in a few weeks and I'm looking forward to investigating their bargains. How sad am I?! ;)

Any idea when Tesco put their reduced stuff out? I usually go about 4pm and there is hardly anything there. It is a 24hr store, dunno if that makes any difference?

There are exceptions. Your generalisation probably applies to "big" Sainsburys, but Sainsburys Local and/or Central, which are vastly overpriced most of the time, normally reduce everything on its sell-by date to 10p an hour or so before closing time.

Despite the fact that my nearest Sainsburys Local has erratic opening hours which make it impossible to plan when there may be bargains to be had, there have been occasions when I have been lucky enough to fill the freezer for a fortnight (cooking for 1, microwave lunches plus stuff to put in evening meals) for less than £2.

At Tesco you will probably find that the reduced stuff will go out quite late at about 8pm.

I used to work in stock control for them and this is just about the time we would go around checking stock and pulling out anything that was going to hit it's sell by date the day after.

How much the reductions are varies from store to store, when the store I worked at first opened they would reduce stuff down to about 10p, after a couple of months we noticed a certain group would only hit the store at that time and the assistant manager stopped the heavy handed reductions and only allowed reductions down to half price.

Unfortunately a greedy few spoiled it for everybody.

Staff weren't allowed to buy the reduced items either, if you were doing your normal shopping you could take advantage of them but you couldn't put anything by for later. We did get the chance of reduced bread before a holiday and sometimes the cooked chickens but never more than that so staff don't get all the good deals.

To be honest I dont see the harm in people going to Tesco, Sainsburys and Asda just to get the bargains and I dont see them as greedy. If something is out of date tomorrow the shop should be grateful they are getting anything for it.

I live opposite sainsburys where I live and the bargains get reduced according to what they are. In the week hot chicken and breads are reduced about 6 p.m and Tuesday and Thursdays at the best. Chiller food and fruit, veg and salad seems to appear around 6 p.m but I cannot see a pattern. I would say that most things are not reduced until 6 p.m and on a Sunday I do not find many bargains at all which is rather strange.

I find Sundays good at Asda though.
