Went to my local co-op a little while ago, what a waste of time - completely missed the reduced section first time around because it was so paltry.

Some mini pork pies for £1
    Some mushrooms
Some wafer thin ham (I'd rather lick the floor)
A couple of swedes for 25p originally about 89p

I purchased a swede and some bagged spuds that were 2 for £2, don't think I'll bother again.

Sainsburys think knocking 5p in the £ off is a good reduction, so not really worth the journey.

    :)
Thats strange as my local sainburys reduced rather well e.g taste the bagel 4 pack normally £1 down to 10p. Warbutons seeded bread normally £1.89 a load down to 10p.

It really depends on who is doing the reductions as to how good it is.

2 large tubs of sundried tomatoes in oil from the delicatessan 60p

  • Ah, but the worst part is trying to find out the times when they reduce everything! Do you think it varies by store, or do they all have some sort of policy on this?

My bargain finds last night were two olive oil paninis for 10p, a macaroni and cheese ready meal for 39p and a pack of double chocolate cookies from the bakery for 30p :)

I am an Asda lurker. I have discovered one of my local asdas reduces meat, cheese deli at about 1.15.

You will be shocked to hear that I actually wait till the member of staff starts reducing and then, scan the counters from the opposite end (so I am not getting in her way) noting the items that have the same expiry date . I then select the items I want and take them to her saying "are you reducing these?" and "I am not trying to hurry you". She is always more than happy to put the reduction on (usually 30%) and hand them back to me. I then go off again and go back to her with another 2 or 3 items. I am saving her time too as I have already picked the items out for her. However I am the only person there doing this,if there was a crowd it might be a different matter.THe meat is very fresh though, and it goes straight into the freezer.

My only rule is,don't buy stuff just for the sake of it .

A few years a go ,at weekends, in another place,it was always the same group of people there every week ..lol.. like a social event (that was when they used to reduce the meat down to half price.)

Morwenna - have you been doing this long? and if so, how much do you think it saves you on your monthly budget? Hope you don't think I'm being nosey, just interested to see if my efforts will be worth it!!!

Sorry TurnaroundSue: Didn't see the question at the time :o I have been doing this for a very long time - my aim is to never pay full price for meat - it doesn't always work, but I am very good at it by now! I am of the school of thought that meat/veg etc doesn't know what the date is, so won't magically become unsafe overnight! I suppose it's an age thing - they never used to put dates on things, so I am used to a sniff test style of doing things. I suppose if you meal plan before shopping this style of saving doesn't work. I tend to plan after I review my hoarded food :D

I have done quite well this week and only had to buy cat food at full price. Also bought halogen bulbs for 50p for 2 and as I have 10  in my bathroom this is a massive saving (although not very MSE I know!!!).

Hollydays, I know what you mean about buying stuff for the sake of it, I bought loads of bread and milk this week (although would use it all) and thought I had loads of room in my 3 freezers, but when I got home they were stuffed to bursting; so in future will be checking my freezers BEFORE going shopping:D . Did a bit of a jig around though and managed to squeeze it all in.

Good luck all you bargin hunters!

Our Tesco rarely has very much on its reduced shelves - and anything there needs using that day it seems. Another penalty of have only two supermarkets to choose from (the other is Waitrose - nothing cheap there at all!).

So, I live within 10 minutes walk of a huge Tesco Extra, and by going there at 8:30/9pm ish, I can get some ridiculous bargains in the reduced section. I've not spend more than 30p on a loaf of bread in months, and on a very good day, have managed to get a week's shopping for under a fiver. What have been your best reduced section finds?

    Some gems that I've had:
Finest pesto: 20p instead of 2 quid
Restaurant collection mozzarella, basil and tomato tarts: 2 for 50p instead of a fiver
Loads of fruit and veg for roughly 10p a bag of things
Finest ciabattas: 18p instead of 1.80

The list goes on... but that's all I can remember now.
Smile - You might make someone's day :)
