 Lula, glad you're OK! Fingers crossed the cost is not too bad, had unexpected warning light on in mine but got away with £30

Can I just stick up for the peasants here?

Despite not living in the south east myself, I would point out these are *working* peasants, and *not* chav peasants with 10 kids called things like Chelsea, Bel Air and Romford...
Hello :j
I know Z - there will be no chance of a seat due to the mass of pin-striped suits, shiny brogues & pink newspapers :rotfl: I was referring more to the plethora of human contact in general & all their contagious illnesses
Actually, I don't mind too much, as it's an interesting variation on my routine, a new experience & there is the fact that LbD ( that's Laidback Dude rather than Little Black Dress
) takes the train through the same stations & at the same time too
Having discovered that it will cost me £5.80 return, I'm now considering comparing the cost to my car running costs. Actually, I'm too lazy to do that, so perhaps you could do that for me ?
Car insurance £250
Tax £110
MoT £55
Service & Spares approx £500 - £800 ?
Fuel £1000 tops
Parking £ 100 ? - no idea really, average about £3 a time, sometimes more, sometimes less
Train journeys to work 4 x days per week at £5.80
I have rail card so can take DD anywhere for about £2 ... although ...
this commuting thing is only viable during term time as when DD at lovely childcarers, I have to use the car. If however, I persuaded her to go to hideous sports camp as she used to, then car not necessary as it's at her school which is on the way to the station
.
Hmmmmm
I reckon commuting by train would cost about £1090 & as long as extra travel during leisure time was less than £1100 then the cost would be about the same.
However, not having a car sucks, & I can say this because I've only had my own one for about 12 years so know very well what life is like without one. DD1 is haunted by memories of shopping by foot & missing out on stuff because places were inaccessible by peasant transport.
There are many places that it would just take too long to get to on the train, & some are plain impossible.
So, although I don't spend £ 23.20 a week on fuel to get to work ( the fuel is actually not the expensive part of running my car ) it's annoying that even if I did use train for work; having the car sat in the garage would still be costing me the same amount in insurance, tax, mot, servicing & spares.
If however, I gave up the car altogether, then I would also be able to save on the £38 a month I pay to rent a garage, which would make a substantial difference
Nah, not gonna happen yet though, & NOBODY mention riding bike to work

That's easy. It's all a matter of appropriate clothing.
Having discovered that it will cost me £5.80 return, I'm now considering comparing the cost to my car running costs. Actually, I'm too lazy to do that, so perhaps you could do that for me ?
It depends on how far you need to go. Especially with LbD...
Most milage allowances are about 50p per mile to take care of depreciation and fuel etc.Car insurance £250
Tax £110
MoT £55
Service & Spares approx £500 - £800 ?
Fuel £1000 tops

Stripping out the parking means it'll cost £2.80 per day to take the train. Fuel is approx £5.60 a gallon, so if you use half a gallon (or approx 15 miles) to get there and back in the car, the two forms of transport cost approx the same.
Though this is not allowing for wear and tear. However, not having a car sucks, & I can say this because I've only had my own one for about 12 years so know very well what life is like without one.
I haven't calculated without a car. This is with the car sat in a garage. So, although I don't spend £ 23.20 a week on fuel to get to work ( the fuel is actually not the expensive part of running my car ) it's annoying that even if I did use train for work; having the car sat in the garage would still be costing me the same amount in insurance, tax, mot, servicing & spares.
It would be. But that's no reason to run it and cost more than the train.Nah, not gonna happen yet though, & NOBODY mention riding bike to work
I thought you did already..?

Well if I looked like that in a bikini & the weather here was that good, then maybe I would

As for LbD - he's my scrabble buddy so all the way to the end of the game

Well if I looked like that in a bikini
I'm sure you can suck your stomach in just as much as she is.& the weather here was that good,
It can't be that good, given her tan is on the borderline between white and blue...then maybe I would
Go for it...
As for LbD - he's my scrabble buddy so all the way to the end of the game
That not be cheap... :rotfl:"Follow the money!" - Deepthroat (AKA William Mark Felt Sr - Associate Director of the FBI)

Yeh, I noticed the sucked in stomach too - doesn't look that comfortable :rotfl:. I'm not sure the flip flops would be my preferred footwear ... & the thing with bikes is ... helmet-hair is inevitable

Perhaps I'll opt for the alternative shiny all-in-one suit with filtration mask - more weather appropriate too.
It may sound trite, but it did actually occur to me that I do need to choose my outfit for tomorrow with a bit of care. It may be perfectly fine to totter to my garage in 3 inch heels, but if I remember rightly, a few weeks back I was moaning about the pain of wearing my FM boots on a night out with the boys, when I had to walk to the station.
Anyway, I think my commute is about 5miles each way & I do travel the slightly longer but more free flowing route ( clutch would probably have gone long before if I used other route) but even taking all this into account, whilst I still need to shop for 2 people & transport 2 people whilst still living in this area, I think I need to keep a car.
I do wonder whether it may be time to start thinking about trading in for newer model though ... :think:0 -
Helmet hair only inevitable if actually wearing helmet... she'd probably just end up with dreads :rotfl:
Lula do you have a local car club? One of my friends uses the one here and finds it's fine for local stuff. They're no good for commuting or long weekends etc but fab for just an afternoon out or picking up something too big to deal with on the bus.
And don't forget you can get shopping delivered now... I notice the Waitrose delivery is free...

Models do that just for the purposes of the photo. Just be thankful she's not on a runway. That's why so many fall over - lack of oxygen...I'm not sure the flip flops would be my preferred footwear ... & the thing with bikes is ... helmet-hair is inevitable
If you get a twiggy cut, helmet-hair is the aim...Anyway, I think my commute is about 5miles each way & I do travel the slightly longer but more free flowing route ( clutch would probably have gone long before if I used other route) but even taking all this into account, whilst I still need to shop for 2 people & transport 2 people whilst still living in this area, I think I need to keep a car.
Yes, but there is no reason why you can't keep the car *and* get the train. Depending on whether it makes sense in timetable/petrol/hassle terms.I do wonder whether it may be time to start thinking about trading in for newer model though ...
These are quite new. Convenient too...

Just don't try and emulate the broken arm look!
Yeah, I noticed that too - I just thought I'd pulled the poor girl to bits already... (was going to call it The Rickets Look...)
Although that arm is nicely tanned ..... do you think it belongs to someone else? :rotfl:
Or it's fake tan on the cheap. And she ran out of teabag...
