Why do my little cakes always stick to the pleated paper cases? I thought the cases would peel off easily.... but they don´t:(

Is it new Hazzie? Mine smelt of new hot plastic the first few times I used it!

It`s a couple of months old now and has been used a couple of times a week.It doesn`t smell of plastic, more like rotting flesh.Even smells like that if I do veg soup in it.

    It`s been cleaned everywhere and doesn`t have a smell when it`s off,just when it`s on.It`s proper revolting.

If you bought it new, I'd take it back to wherever you got it from.

If it was pre-owned, I wonder if something's got into the casing and near the elements? And only smells when you're cooking - although I'd expect a burnt smell or a permanent smell, IYSWIM. But in that case I'd contact the manufacturer and see if they have any helpful hints ...

    Another possibility is vigorous stirring.

If you slosh everything around you get a thin film of the liquid from your meal up the side of the pot. The whole pot gets hot in a slow cooker and so this thin film dries out fast and then begins to burn and can smell really nasty (and not actually smell of burning - just plain nasty).

So try being careful not to splash stuff up the sides next time you use it and see if it makes a difference.

    HTH :)

I have some butter that was best before 8th April 2008. Can I still use it in cake making?

    Thanks.
  • Is it really gone off? Maybe this sounds a bit gross but if it looks OK I would give it a good smell, taste a tiny bit - and if no alarm bells went off use as normal.

    taste it!! Sniff it!!

If it tastes sour/smells rancid it isn't useable.. it will no doubt be fine though.. you can freeze butter you know..

Trust your nose.. you'll know if it is 'off'

    Hi Wendy,

If it's been kept in the fridge it will be fine. 'Best before' means that it will be better used before that date wheras 'use by' means that it really shouldn't be used after the date. I'll add this post into the quick questions thread.

If you taste a little bit or smell it you will definitely know if it's ok or not. Rancid butter is very distinctive and unpleasant.
