Not sure if it should be posted here or the discussion forum but probably get a better response here....
I am confused as to what the "purpose" of the DLA benefit is. From reading the sites that others have linked to here it appears to be to cover the cost of having people help you however the money is paid to the person with the disability rather than the "carer". To go down my usual controversial route it seems that DLA in many cases is almost a token compensation payment for having been dealt a poor hand by fate.
A friend is partially deaf (wears hearing aids) has a good job (around £150k) and receives £33 a week in DLA (though has no carer and no specialist equipment other than a thing to make lights flash when the doorbell rings and to be honest I think I could really do with one of them too) and makes a thing of buying the first round every week with his "pity money" as he calls it.
I dont get why he should be getting money from the government when there is no additional cost for him in life and even if there was he could clearly afford to pay it.
If the purpose of DLA is to provide carers then why 1) is it not paid direct to the carer in all cases rather than to the person and 2) why is it not means tested... surely the governments money should only be there for those that cannot help themselves rather than all who have had a poor hand.
(note this is not a stab at anyone claiming DLA or saying that it should be abolished but simply to understand it better)

Same reason why people claim child tax credits etc
Being that you have dredged up an 8 month old thread would you care to explain further what these *reasons* are?:heartpuls baby no3 due 16th November :heartpulsTEAM YELLOWDFD 16/6/10"Shut your gob! as this thread has been dragged upFor some people it's just a free car or £170.00 a month, just tell the doctor you got sore knees after falling during sports they will put it down as condrimiton patella??? sothing similar any way and hey presto 6 weeks later you have a shiny new car
forgot to mention i am willing to kick anyones kneecaps off when they pull that one, its one of the most commonly used excuses
Free car or £170 a month? If you are losing £170 a month then it's not free!

You hear (pun not intended) that people can't figure out why have DLA oh on such and such amount of money and yet able bodied people claim child tax credit.
regardless how much you earn you are entitled to it  wether its dla tax credit or whats not :-)While I breathe.... I hope0 -

that statement doesn't make any sense, do you mean people on DLA can't have child tax credit?
You don't have to be able bodied to claim tax credits the same as you don't have to be in a wheelchair to claim DLA.
Tax credits are means tested, DLA is not.The "Bloodlust" Clique - Morally equal to all. Member 10

Ooops typed to quick.
What ever disability you have you are entitled to claim regardless how much you earn.
Although the first poster not against the person claiming but you hear of people who are on amazing amount of money still claim tax credit just as bad as the ones who are claiming DLA.
The whole thing is a shambles ,but good luck to anyone who claim or struggling toWhile I breathe.... I hope0
