Kids knocking on strangers doors begging for sweets.???
What happened to parents teaching them NOT to take sweets from strangers.

I do keep my hall dark anyway, but my living room's in the front and the lights are on.

Some children knocked anyway (I have a knocker-letterbox, as well as a bell) but by the time I'd got to the door and picked up the sweets, they'd gone.

Trick or Treat has, thank goodness, really faded here, the last few years.

Please folks, if you are NOT home to trick or treaters, would you mind turning off the front hall light for a couple of hours so the kids know whether to call?

We went out and had a woman whip open her door and shout at our 8 year old, we were both with him, though standing back, and we were observing the usual rules of only knocking doors that were lit up AND had a living room light on, he only knocked once and it was just so uncalled for.

If you are not in, please leave the light off just for one night so the kids know not to bother you, or put up a no TorT'ers sign if you don't want the light off like some people have.

I doubt any of you are mean enough to yell at little kids, but it makes it easier for everyone if everyone knows the rules. While it wasn't an old tradition here, it's certainly a new one and the streets are now full of kids. All the parents sites and the letters they send home from school tell you these are the rules you should follow, it seems a shame if only the kids know them and risk upsetting people - and people upsetting the kids.

    Peace out.

What are there "rules" of which you speak? Custom & practice in other countries who actually have a long tradation of ToTing is they only visit house that have a lantern in the front window
  • we don't have a pumpkin yet we're fine with trick or treating
  • Likewise, if you see a note on a door that says 'Please do not knocks or ring doorbell, baby sleeping' don't knock on the door or ring the doorbell and for a bl00dy long time!!

We are not in America, and need not follow American traditions. If you want to have T&T'ers then make it obvious, otherwise assume that most of us don't want our doorbell ringing after a long day at work or at least do it over the previous weekend when we have some chance at some kip.

Aways used to have to sing in my day to get a few coppers, but we only did it at houses where we knew the owners.

I imagine that is true in England, but Scotland, Ireland and the Isle of Man will all claim they've been doing far far longer than the Yanks. But turnips none of this namby pamby easy to hollow out pumpkin malarkey - to carve a big turnip (and thats a Swede to you English) takes dedication and a big box of Elastoplast

An alternative to telling people how to light their homes would be to not take your children out begging.
