Trick or Treat?

What a bunch of harsh responses (which is getting more usual on this site).
I have to say that I didn't know of the rules, such as they are.
I am not averse to T or T, although I was when I had a small child who's sleep may be interrupted by the doorbell - so I put a sign on the door.
I was delayed in getting home last night so missed any callers - and I probably had some because, not knowing the aformentioned rules, I did put a pumpkin on my doorstep amidst my planters, but it was just decoration, not an invitation.

We took our two out for the first time,we seen people in there kitchen milling about yet chose to ignore the door which is fine, but wouldnt it be easier to put a sign up rather than just being ignorant.its one night and a bit of fun if u dont want to join in then stick a sign on the door makes life easier and stops u from keep being disturbed
Maybe they were cooking, cleaning or washing up, you know, things that people normally do in their kitchens.
You are the ignorant one for expecting those people to drop what they were doing to answer the door for you.
I don't have to do anything, like put a sign up or leave lights off.
If I choose not to answer my front door to unwanted callers, that is my perogative.Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0 -
We just went for the ones that had their houses decorated. Soon sorts out who wants callers and who doesn'tSquirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

We went out and had a woman whip open her door and shout at our 8 year old, we were both with him, though standing back, and we were observing the usual rules of only knocking doors that were lit up AND had a living room light on, he only knocked once and it was just so uncalled for.
If you are not in, please leave the light off just for one night so the kids know not to bother you, or put up a no TorT'ers sign if you don't want the light off like some people have.
I doubt any of you are mean enough to yell at little kids, but it makes it easier for everyone if everyone knows the rules. While it wasn't an old tradition here, it's certainly a new one and the streets are now full of kids. All the parents sites and the letters they send home from school tell you these are the rules you should follow, it seems a shame if only the kids know them and risk upsetting people - and people upsetting the kids.
Peace out.
I don't have a porch. My front door is in the my living room, which goes straight onto the pavement. I'm not sitting in the dark just so kids don't knock on my door! I was out until 7.15pm anyway and had one knock on the door after I came in but I didn't answer. That's how I deal with it, I would never shout at kids.0 -
I always thought you had to turn off all the lights (particularly at the front of the house) if you didn't want trick or treaters to call and put on the porch light if you did want them to knock. I wonder if this is a regional thing? I always thought it was an unspoken rule.
I hadn't heard of the pumpkin idea previously, but it does sound like a good idea. I'd love to see a press campaign next September urging people to display pumpkins to opt in, rather than telling people to put "No Trick or Treaters" posters up to opt out, because they read to me as "Please egg my house" and I wouldn't want to display that anywhere!
I didn't want to participate in Halloween this year for a whole multitude of reasons (including living in an area that got rioted earlier this year and not knowing who the good'uns and bad'uns are through not having kids of my own, working with children etc) so sat in darkness all night, resenting the fact I had to do so to get out of what I think is a truly pointless celebration. It worked though - no one rang the door.0 -

Hold on a moment! Back up the truck!
Let me get this straight - you knocked on the door of people who obviously were not expecting you and YOU think THEY are the ignorant ones for daring to carry on with their normal evening's activities?
Sorry, but no. Just no.its one night and a bit of fun if u dont want to join in then stick a sign on the door makes life easier and stops u from keep being disturbed
How about if you only visit the houses of people who have opted in to the whole halloween thing instead of expecting others to opt out. Perhaps people who want to opt in could stick some kind of sign on the door or something. Just a thought.
Keep in mind too that its not "just one night". It's a day which, like any other day in the calendar, means all kinds of different things to all kinds of different people.
For me, its the anniversary of my mother's untimely death from cancer, so I think under the circumstances I'm entitled to not to have to remember to opt out of trick or treating. If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything0 -
