I have not read the rest of the thread yet, sorry if I'm repeating what someone else has said, but will have to say JAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm totally addicted to their Essential jams and marmelade, cannot eat anything else. Don't go there often, so I had to try and make do with Sainsbury own or Wilkin and Son, but they are not as nice.
Incredible value for money! 84p for jam, 61p for marmalade!
They also do a fantastic 3-fruit marmalade for £1.29, the best marmalade ever, very lemony!!!!

PS also OLIVES! the best from any supermarket, particularly the ones from the salad bar.

Sainsbury's sounds as mean and tight fisted as Tesco who only reduces at the most inconvenient and least helpful time meaning they shift the financial burden onto the already hard pressed Customer assaulted from all sides.

Supermarkets, like all companies, are out there to make money using whatever means works for them.
Waitrose are the 'nicer' face of supermarkets only because their business strategy involves attracting customers who want to be treated better, don't mind paying a tad more for the privilege and would like to think that their money goes to a company that is more ethical.
That's it. Their ethics is the same as any other supermarket: whatever sells

    (BTW I love Waitrose :))

Waitrose today had President butter for £1.20 which is 20p cheaper than Ssainsburys (but same as Tesco). Bought one of them and one of their own essential butter which I haven't tried before.

Almost nothing.... its all overpriced. The prices are ridiculous

This is not advice - hopefully it's common sense..

Other things are expensive e.g. potatoes, but other are not, like good quality jam (see my previous post).
If you are after value/basics prices then Waitrose is obviously not the right place, but if you know what you buy and what you avoid you can get much better quality for similar prices to the other main supermarkets.

Lidl and Waitrose are the best supermarkets, in my opinion, where you can find good value for money (in very different ways), the other supermarkets are are mostly a rip off IMHO.
