Please help me not waste more money on mascara that doesn't work...

  • Hi- OP I have exactly the same problem. I have never thought it could be oily lashes but I've always attributed the problem to having long straight lashes. I mean really long. Cow-like long. I think that because they're straight with no natural curve, every time I blink, the mascara is rubbing off on to my skin underneath my eyes. So I use a eyelash curler. It helps some days, some days it doesn't..but its the only think I've found which minimises the problem (apart from dying the lashes).

Just wanted to thank JustWonderful and let others know that after emailing Max Factor they've sent me an apology and a £15 voucher!:j
I wouldn't normally have thought of contacting them. Thanks a lot!:T

Bobbi Brown Smudgeproof mascara is bomb-proof! It's around £18 so not cheap but really stays put.

I am using a Maybelline one at the moment though, the collosal volume waterproof one and that is really good too, but would've bought the Bobbi Brown one again if I'd had the money when my last one ran out!

Ive jst read some really good reviews of the bobbi brown one online so think I might buy it when I get paid. Its £16.20 on the John lewis website. gonna have a look on ebay too.

    Is it working?

Id be interested to know because every single mascara Ive tried seems to smudge on me after a few hours.

Hi there - sorry I'd lost track of the thread!
The clubbing mascara is definitely the best one I've tried. On the odd occasion it smudges (although infrequently enough for me to think I've over-done the eye cream/moisturiser on that day!) and now and again I get a few bits flaked off, but overall it's definitely the best of the lot. I've not been swimming or anything in it yet, but on a day to day basis it's good :)

How about the others people have been trying?

Every few years I try regular mascara again and find whatever make or version it slides down my face, as well as being often clumpy and weird looking. It doesn't help that some of my eyelashes grow in really odd directions so anything too thick makes them clump and leave big gaps.

Several years ago I found that cake mascara was good and would still recommend that - this is the one I currently use: http://www.makeupalley.com/product/showreview.asp?ItemID=53964

More recently though I've found tube mascara in the form of Mirenesse. Its Australian I think, and quite hard to find here, but I was introduced by Latest in Beauty who appear to have the trial size back in stock - http://www.latestinbeauty.com/lxs/
at £4 its lasted me ages and I've not yet opened the full size one I bought.

(ps I've just tried to get a sample of a different tube mascara - from blinc mentioned earlier in the threat - but they are out of stock)
  • I always use ELF mascara primer and dior blackout waterproof.

I use an Avon mascara and it has been great. In the past I have also really liked the Ruby and Millie mascara but I can't seem to find it near me anymore.
Taking responsibility one penny at a time!
  • I swear by my Nivea extreme! Nabbed it from direct cosmetics online for practically nothing - get all my makeup from them which is great if you can't "make up" (har) your mind! :)
