  • Thanks for that. She's already paid so she can get the course in before the deadline, and I'm going to pen a letter tonight and see if I can appeal the charge. It can't hurt!

Beki - I hope your father jumped ship as soon as he could and found another insurer! £600 cannot be justified, surely!
  • However unfair it might seem, in some areas the favoured spot for cameras is just at the start or just before the end of a limit - indeed there was a case a while ago ( I don't have the details to hand) where the camera was actually detecting people's speed BEFORE the speed limit sign.

This seems to be a common approach in Staffordshire for example; anyone using the A51 who thinks you don't slow down until after the sign will soon pick up some points.

I'm no priesthood candidate, I've had speeding points myself; but I do know the law's the law and there's no point bleating when I've been caught. We're fortunate the speed awareness is offered at all; it would be far easier to simply fine everybody for every transgression however small.

  • I'm only bleating about having to pay twice for the course because of a crash on the M4! ;)

True - of course if there were a standard approach across the country, and everyone could attend a course locally, it would make much more sense - but that would be too much to ask!

IIRC Admiral (and possibly Elephant and Bell, by default) has a code for entering a SAC in their "conviction code" box, despite it being a way of avoiding conviction.

On the fee issue, a SAC is offered on a completely discretionary basis, so there's no law that says you get one, or what terms might be offered.

If they want to charge another fee, that's their prerogative. If the alternative is a CoFP with 3 points and £60 fine, I'd use the same pros and cons for accepting now as she did in the first place...

You have to tell your insurance anyway, so you save nothing, its just a make money out of you scam

No you don't. They only want to know about convictions. If you have been offered an awareness course and you complete it you don't have a conviction so you don't have to declare it.

    ..

I just checked and Admiral do have a code for a speed awareness course. However....................they ask the following question

"Do you have any motoring offences from the last 5 years, resulting in a fixed penalty, endorsement, conviction or disqualification, or have any pending prosecution?"

As the speed awareness course is not a fixed penalty, endorsement, conviction or disqualification you just tick the no box which means it doesn't bring up the window with the list of convictions.

When did the offence take place?
  • Would it be possible to put a claim to the insurance of the party responsible for the crash for the lost fee, travelling time, fuel and wear and tear?
