I use Trip Advisor all the time and tend to take extreme views either way with a pinch of salt. but a hotel or restaurant with lots of reviews and the majority of them swinging towards bad or good is usually going to be an indication of the quality of it.
My problem is that it seems to have become about praise or complaint and not much in between. I see reviews as feedback and I've had many wonderful holidays but if I'd reviewed them then the establishments might have been quite far off what they advertise, and what others might have experienced. I don't feel the need to complain whilst on holiday about small things that don't particulary bother me - but that doesn't mean I don't notice them. So I admit I often don't bother writing a review because it would ultimately be better to send a written feedback direct to the hotel, rather than it look like I'm complaining in public about things that I didn't complain about while I was there.0

I haven't read it and don't want to but even before knowing he'd replied I began to feel sorry for him.
Just like the traffic warden in that fly on the wall documentry who used his 15 mins of fame to play up to the cameras confessed later that it ruined his life.
I reckon Richard (or Rick?) should draw a line under it now and forget his career as a reviewer as well as fessing up to his staff at work that he's been a wally. 0 0

as above read the too good or too bad with a pinch of salt, its a great way to decide on a hotel.
Just booked a £70 a night munich hotel which has 4/5 on 100s of reviews
the only 1/5 stated the hotel was crap for the £300 a night he paid..
!!!!!! the hotel maximum price when i'm going is £1100

I was astounded at this programme. Yes there were some dippy reviewers, pen on sheets and counting the tea and coffee, taking without using it.
But the hoteliers were shocking! They are taking money from people. They ought to expect reviews. Trip Advisor is liberating and hopefullyll prevent these customer hating types from pocketing customers hard earned money whilst slagging them off and providing minuscule service.
I thought the Australian woman and her partner were absolutely spot on. How dare that seafood restaurant owner and his crying wife argue with them for not liking the food that was served up to them at exorbitant cost (average main course £20+++). They were right to walk out - their problem was that they ever walked in, in the first place. I will now avoid Norfolk, I dont want to come across bigots like that couple.
There used to be an adage that the customer is always right, I think we need to relearn it. It is the customer who pays the wages - attention mr heart problem, crying wife, bev et al.

I have stayed at the Eltermere Inn and met the owner and he certainly didn't behave in the manner some of the TA reviews suggest whilst we stayed there. I didnt think he came across badly in the show either aside from his snobbish comment about the Jag, which was probably tongue in cheek.0

Reading the reviews for the hotel it's another case of ignoring the 1 review ranters and drawing your own conclusions from the rest.I have stayed at the Eltermere Inn and met the owner and he certainly didn't behave in the manner some of the TA reviews suggest whilst we stayed there. Interestingly I read the review from foul mouthed stu.bec and was amused to note as follows when comparing the two reviews.
Review of the Eltermere Inn ... 4 out of 5
"The shower is the best I have ever used throughout the world, a title previously held by Crowne Plaza at Changi Airport, Singapore, a 5 star property".
Review of Crowne Plaza Changi Hotel ... 1 out of 5
"My daughter wanted a bath, the water ran yellow! I have no idea what it was, i phoned the front desk"
So even though at the time stu.bec thought the shower at the Crowne Plaza was the best in the world, he chose to write a review negating to mention it and instead speaks of yellow water coming out of the bath tap? The MSE Dictionary The MSE Dictionary

Lol i think that these people need to get out more, for me when i stay in a hotel/sc acommodation then i'm usually there because i'm on holiday.
So as long as i've a nice clean bed, and bathroom i'm ok with that, i'm not into counting hangers, how many uht milks there are, is there dust on the picture rail..............it's just bed and out for me.
But as for reviews yes it does go on, we went again to gumbet this year, and every restaurant we ate in, asked us to do a review about them, and they even went into details about other restaurants doing fake reviews.0
