I read this a couple of times and then still umm-ed and aah-ed about it! In the end I bought insurance (a few hours ago!) with http://www.weddinginsurance.co.uk/ as it seemed to be the best price after reading through the whole policy!
As the MSE article says ... it's a 'just in case' and is a fairly small cost in comparison to the whole wedding event.
Like all my other insurance though, I hope I don't have to use it!

Depends on your budget as a lot of time there is an excess but even if you are spending only a few hundred quid on the venue, then yes I think its worth it esp if you go for a "good" insurance company rather than just the cheapest.
The number of posts on here that I have read saing "my venue has gone into liquidation" or (and this nearly happened to us) "the place where I got my wedding dress from has gone" and that dont have insurance. I think its important when booking things up to 6, 12 or even more months in advance, in any economic climate you can't always tell whats going to happen a number of months down the line!
Mine was £50 for up to 10k or something like that (well above out budget) with Ecclesiastical - bit more expensive than elsewhere but they pay out without too much hastle as long as your claim is fair and just.
Always read the policy and limitations though regardless of costs and make sure its right for you.0 -
Definitely get it; it really doesn't cost much - a one-off payment, usually no more than £50. Mine cost about £34 from Ecclesiastical, about whom I have heard very good things on here. I now have peace of mind that if a supplier goes bust or, worse, one of us is injured or ill, that we don't lose all our money.

Ours was a complete waste of money - we didn't need it!
I'm sure I'd have felt very differently if we *had* needed it, though

As with any insurance, if you never claim it can feel like a waste. However, with any major purchase (and for most of us the total cost of a wedding is certainly major) it is a LOT of money to lose if something goes wrong. Remember, it may be something out of your control that goes wrong...
If you read people's stories on here (like fly dragon fly whose wedding was affected by severe weather, but who was able to have a second wedding paid for with insurance money) I think you'll agree that it's a small drop in your budget that could make a huge difference if the worst happens.
For us, the cheapest cover with Ecclesiastical more than covered our whole budget, but cost less than 0.5% of the total cost of our wedding. I spent more on stamps!0 -
As someone whose reception venue has gone bust v recently then yes def get insurance. We didn't (it was on our to-do list). We will get our deposits back but it's going to take some time and in the meantime we need to book somewhere else and pay for that too.
All in all, it's a nightmare and I could really do without the hassle.0 -
We had insurance from Ecclesiastical. Never had to use it but went with them as they appear to be one of the better ones when it comes to paying out. Cost and cover was competative.:jProud mummy to a beautiful baby girl born 22/12/11 :j0

I hate wasting money but am glad about 2 'wastes' for our wedding...insurance that we didn't need, and umbrellas we bought for what turned out to be the most gorgeous blue sky cloudless day ever!0

Another vote for Ecclesiastical here. We're doing a winter wedding, so thought it was pretty essential! £60 for a tailor made policy covering everything to max price not minimum...
If at first you don't succeed, then sky-diving isn't for you0
