What was "below the belt " about my comment? It was factually correct both regarding her question and the answers she received.

She was actually offered an enormous amount of practical advice but, unfortunately, it didn't include telling her how she could get the loan she wanted because she's ineligible for it.

I totally agree with the people who have raised the issue of constant nastiness. And then there are people like BobAjob who dig up previous posts to see if the thread info tallies. I use a lot of sites, mainly writing, and I can't think of a forum I despise more than this one!

What's wrong with checking whether someone's post tallies with things they've posted earlier? IRL we'd say, "Hang on, last Wednesday you said something completely different!", wouldn't we?

Digging up previous posts of yours (!) I see you describe yourself as a journalist. Don't you check up on what people tell you to authenticate their stories, because that would be normal journalistic practice.

If you despise it so much why post? If people are saying one thing one minute, and the exact opposite the next why shouldn't people question it?

This thread has amazed me - i very rarely post on this forum, but felt I had to in this instance because it seems I disagree with almost every single post. For starters, people shouldn't come onto sites like this if they don't want other users to post the cold hard facts and offer solutions which may seem unpalatable - if you just want to vent and receive lots of reassuring noises and people telling you it will 'all work out in the end' then I suggest they go somewhere else as this forum is aimed at people who actually want to do something about their situation rather than just getting meaningless reassurances.

On the other hand the spite and malice that is delivered in some posts is staggering - feel free to give a poster advice but if you are only posting to get your kicks by putting the boot into someone who is less well off than you or someone that you for some reason see as inferior to you, then I for one would rather you didn't post at all.
