Thanks, I meant to ask about that. I always use my roast chicken bones to make stock but wasn't sure if you could do the same with uncooked

yes will be fine, chuck the bones, skin etc in a large pan with any sorry looking veg and boil for a few hours. will give you another couple of meals if you pick the meat off and make yummy chic and veg soup with some crusty hm bread, gosh my bellies rumblin at the thoughtx.One day I will live in a cabin in the woods0

No harm in roasting the bones first. I use a mixture of roasted and raw bones.
As for jointing a chicken, this is a great start to "butchery" or just for giving you more confidence to tackle a piece of meat. Have a go at filleting and skinning a fish next. Start with a firm fish like salmon.

I've searched and found a few threads saying how much cheaper it is to buy a whole chicken and portion it yourself, but how do you do it? I have no knowledge of butchery and only the usual carving knife and kitchen scissors for equipment. Can anyone tell me how to half and quarter a whole raw chicken, is it fairly easy? I have visions of a pile of mangled meat and OH taking me to A&E! However it's nigh on impossible to buy half a chicken in the shops and a decent chicken isn't too pricy so I'd like to have a go.

delia explains it well in te complete cookery course ( i think it is that book) u could look in the libary for a book with pics...fanny craddock cuts up a cooked chicken in her xmas cookery series but i dont know if that is on tv any time soononwards and upwards0
