Did you get them in Tesco's today Ronankfan?? I was there about 1.5 hours ago, maybe our path's crossed! :)
My freezers are both full, but I think with a little shuffling around, I will be able to make some room for 2.

I squirrelled this one away in my mind as one of the members at Downsizer was working on an article about 16 meals from one chicken (the idea being, that it makes it much easier on the stressed pocket to buy a better quality bird, if you are currently put off by the prices).

Part one is all about jointing a whole, fresh bird ready to cook, with detailled pics, hope it is useful:

oh god see i could never do that ,the pics make me wanna hurl :rotfl:

    fab site though :T
  • That looks far too much like hard work to me!!!

I normally chuck a whole chicken in the slow cooker, we eat some as a roast, then whatever's left gets used in stir fry, curry, casserole, etc, or just cold in sandwiches. I'm fairly certain that it's perfectly ok to reheat chicken ONCE, but not more than that. So if you cooked some chicken, let it cool then used it in a curry, that would be fine but you couldn't reheat the curry.

Feel free to correct me if i'm wrong!!!
I like cooking with wine......sometimes I even put it in the food!
  • Just a quick update as I saw that this thread had popped back up! Chopped up both chickens into pieces!! Didn't do a bad job!! And still got some pieces left!!

Some went into a hunter style chicken last night that was yummy!!

Don't be afraid to chop up a chicken! I've found it works out cheaper than buying breasts.

I do this too, it takes about 3 minutes to heat the slow cooker, boil kettle, shove a halved lemon up the chicken, then put the whole bird in the slow cooker with some stock/herbs and pour over the boiling water, then leave on high for about 5 hours.

I'm really squeemish about raw meat, but this method means minimal handling. Best of all once it's cooked, all the meat just falls off when you touch it with a knife. No need for sharp knives, or diagrams of how to do it, just loads of meat. I do find, though, that the carcass tends to collapse so you have to fiddle around a bit to get all the bits of bones out.

I steam tonnes of veg seperately and make a couple of large bowls of sauces, eg, curry sauce, white sauce with tarragon, then mix chicken and veg into the different sauces, scoop portions into freezer bags and freeze as complete meals.
