i am interested in one of these airers, do you get any shrinkage of the clothes on them like in a tumble dryer?
I use a normal airer at the moment and most things dry overnight, how many hour do t-shirts, socks etc take to dry on a heated airer?0 -
I too have no central heating, just a wood burner in the lounge and live in a damp and cold cottage. I must admit if the weather is really dire then I will take it to the launderette. The drums are bigger and I find I can bung in at least 5 loads in one go. It's in the next town and in an industrial estate so parking and convenience are great. Don't think it's too expensive cos need to go to the shops anyway and actually it doesn't seem too often.
I find if I can get it out for a blow outside then it's even better. Have a mainly glass porch at the front and it's south facing so it goes there for a few days. Also despite having a very well lagged hot water tank the pipe leading to it gets hot so have a cheap plastic hanger with pegs (Wilco) to finish stuff off in the airing cupboard. Also some items can be ironed dry if they are slightly damp.Am reluctant to use the dehumidfier due to electricity costs, but that dryer from Lakeland looks really good.0 -

The problem we had with our Robert Dyas heated rail, was that it heats the fabric really hot on the rails, while taking longer for any fabric not right on the drying rail. So, the fabrics were getting slightly more worn looking where they had been laying on the rail, and less worn inbetween, so rather a stripey look. I had to keep moving and folding clothes over to get them dry all over. It took a long time and alot of faffing.Debts 2004: £6000..............................................Aug 2007: £0!!!!0 -
Are you sure your washing machine spin dryer is working efficiently. I can get things dry overnight by hanging on curtain rail with window open. Or using a clothes airer. If there is any sign of wind outside I will change the beds but I am fortunate that I have a garden at present. So dry what I can outside and finish off inside. Have you seen the Brabantia wall mounted clother line?

wow going to invest in one of these - i feel like this thread was written to me! We have recetly moved to a flat from a 3 bed/storey house with a laundry room, frying clothes is a nightmare & between the 3 of us we are always waiting for a load to dry before another can go in. Thank you!DF as at 30/12/16

I'd recommend a dehumidifier - I suspect they would be cheaper to run than the Lakeland heater, and they have the essential bonus of actually *removing* the water, not just moving it around the house.0

I am struggling to dry all our clothes (5 of us) since my tumble dryer died, I have rads in every room covered in washing, plus a clothes horse. I am trying hard to be good and manage without another dryer, but seriously starting to consider it, also I have a problem with damp in this house at the best of times

We are keeping the heating off and the tumble dryer is for emergency use only so not been used yet.
I am currently hanging the clothes from the wm straight to 2 clothes horses which will then go outside. If it then looks like rain or i am going out i can grab the racks much qucker than unpegging stuff. I will try to keep them outside for the whole day if possible then they come into the kitchen overnight. The next morning i will put everything spread out as much as possible into the airing cupboard which finishes them off. I don't get any problems with musty clothes this way.
There are 5 of us and i have to do this routine every day and i still have a huge washing pile but it's getting us by.0 -

Thank you for that idea. I do not have an airing cupboard and our kitchen is tiny, but I am going to give the racks outside a try :T
