Left to drive car that is illegal?

To be fair to the OP , the garage should have been professional enough to have advised that the car was illegal to drive. However, the ultimate responsiblilty is with the driver of any vehicle to ensure that the vehicle is in a legal condition to drive. So yes it was the op's fault.
Surely nobody should need to be told that driving a motor vehicle without brake lights is dangerous? This argument may work of the problem was that of a technical nature, but it wasn't, and the hazard it causes should be obviously to anybody thats actually been permitted to hold a UK driving license.0 -
I phoned the garage and went mental at them for letting me drive the car home with no brake lights.
My question is am I in the right and they shouldn't have let me drive home with no brake lights or is it safe to do so?
Thanks for reading and sorry if I'm rambling I can't stop shaking.
I absolutely find it astonishing you feel it is the garages fault, so much so you phoned them up and went 'mental' at them.
Maybe they should advice that pulling out in front of other cars in dangerous or that driving with 1 wheel missing is dangerous, ect ect. Maybe you could take responsibility for your actions -- they didn't force you to drive a dangerous vehicle -- you chose to.0 -
I only passed my test 6 months ago
Also OP guess what would of happened if you had caused an accident and the police were involved.
1) charged with driving an unfit vehicle
2) licence taken off you and you would have to resit your drive test
3) the motorbility car taken off you and you stopped from getting another motorbility car
all because you chose to drive away from a garage with a defective vehicle0 -

This is all true but I still would expect the Garage to show professionalism and reiterate to the customer that the car was not in a legal condition. Similar to Pharmacists reminding you that Alcohol shouldn't be taken with drugs.
yes but even if the garange did they could not stop you from, driving away as the OP did. in the eyes of the law the driver is responsible and not the garage.Similar to Pharmacists reminding you that Alcohol shouldn't be taken with drugs.
this still does not stop you from taking alcohol does it0 -
It seems to me that the OP has amitted they are at fault, so time to stop bashing them?Toyota - 'Always a better way', avoid buying Toyota.0

I hold my hands up and I admit it was my fault. Having never had to deal with anything like this before I assumed the garage would have stopped me taking my car if it was unsafe/dangerous to do so.
I made the decision to drive home but only because I was told to and I assumed the garage knew best.
Obviously I will never do anything so stupid again.
Thank you for all replies.0 -
A professional garage would have offered to give the customer a lift home.0

I remember a tv show about dodgy hire cars, Bald tyres no brakes.
People tried to report them to the police but the only reply they got was the driver is respsonsible
for the condition of the vehicle.
Driving the vehicle could have earned you 3 - 6 point on your licence. If i read right you havnt passed
your test long so that would mean it gets revoked.
You would now be a learner again and have to sit the theory and practical test again.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
i know this is a little off the track, but is there any way of telling if a car is on the motorbility scheme?
can you tell by the tax disc?
i know of a athletic coach who i suspect has a motorbility car and ferries clients around in it but i want to be sure before i report it , (trying to be fair to him and avoid wasting time for the authorities)0
