I am female not male.
Thanks for all replies. I was on the assumption that the garage knew what they were talking about. If it was unsafe why did they let me leave with the car? Why, in fact, did they tell me to drive home and bring the car back on Monday?
I didn't just randomly turn up. I booked the car in. It is a mobility car so I need the vehicle for my disabled daughter.
They can not just take the car off you, as it isnt safe to drive, its your car and your responsibility, i do hope you didnt drive back with your daughter in as well, never mind putting your own life at risk but your daughters too!Is a Bipolar bear0 -

Fair enough. I thought they may have said "Oh it's illegal to drive can you make some other arrangments to get home as we would advise not driving it". Not tell me to drive it home and bring it back on Monday.

The fact the some people will drive a car without brake lights then complain someone that nearly rear-ended them is ridiculous. You were at fault, no-one else.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. Just be thankful it was a near miss.
Let this also be a lesson about the responsibility of the car that you are driving. Not only for your benefit but your daughters and other road users alike.
I don't think the garage were to blame here.Thinking critically since 1996....0 -
I'm not complaining about the near miss at all. I felt so sorry for the poor bloke. He must have had quite a fright too!!
Yes it is a lesson for me. A lesson not to do as I am told by the garage! I accept full responsibility.
Garage sent a driver to pick up my car so it was picked up at 1pm. They have just phoned to say they took the switch out of a brand new un-registered car and put it in my car and my car was now being valeted before being brought back to me.
I'm actually terrified about getting back in it.0 -
To be fair to the OP , the garage should have been professional enough to have advised that the car was illegal to drive. However, the ultimate responsiblilty is with the driver of any vehicle to ensure that the vehicle is in a legal condition to drive. So yes it was the op's fault.Always get a Qualified opinion - My qualifications are that I am OLD and GRUMPY:p:p0

Something similar happened to me years ago, I was indicating to turn left when the car behind (who was right up my arris anyway) was banging on the horn at me. I pulled in down the road and got the teenager to press on the brakes and indicate etc and all had failed. It turned out my control box had gone kaput and I had no brakes or indicators.
I finished up sticking a big sign in the back window saying "HAND SIGNALS - NO BRAKE LIGHTS' and limping it very carefully up to the garage where it stayed until it was fixed.0
