  • I don't think it works that way but works by tonnage ie one can pull up to a certain tonnage. Maybe I'm wrong. This is for NI also.

Who is best to get for this?

1 conviction, mildly over limit, don't know how many points I got, and was convicted in September 2009. Only got my license back in August.

I got a quote today for a hyundai 1.6 matrix for £7,000 - the car costs £4,500. I want a decent wagon for business but even I think a hatchback will set me back at least 2.5-3K and is no use as a 1 ltr engine I don't think would be able to tug a trailer. Could a 1.2 tug a trailer filled with wood or coal?

And is it possible to fit a tow bar onto a hatchback?

I'm not going to preach about the conviction, the courts have already done that. Anyways £7k is high, but you may find it's the going rate, would the income from the business not support the insurance premium? your looking at about £600 per month which is about £30 per working day :o
Some insurance companies were offing less than 12 months insurance so that some NCB could be built up.
  • Just got quoted 2K for a 1.2 2007 Corsa which I can get for £4800 all in with tow bar - only problem is I hate the colour. So I'll probably be getting a bank loan for it next week, say at 8K, which will cover remaining business costs. Also thinking of getting some drain unblocking equipment and setting myself up in there too as that would cover a few angles whilst not requiring a good bit of space.

You can tow on a post 1997 licence but a lot more restrictions, The whole outfit must be less than
    3.5tons gross plated weights.

Trailer cannot weigh more than the unladen weight of the car even if the maufacturers limits allow it.

Not sure about towing for business use though.

Carrying logs is going to need something with a lot more power though. 850kg minus the weight
of the trailer wont be a huge pile.

Trailers noseweight maybe an issue also.

Rear suspension, Clutch, Engine will all be heading for an early death.

  • What car would you recommend as built for holding this type of stuff - or do you think a van would be the way to go?

Something with decent pulling power. Usually a diesel, More low down torque compared to a petrol car.

What sort of weight are you looking at pulling?

    Thats the big deciding factor.

Do you have a trailer? Have you seen the price of a decent one?

To be honest, with those insurance costs and a chequered driving past I'd be looking at income streams that didn't rely on driving for a while ,until the bulk of the pain has ebbed away and you can get insured for a reasonable sum.
A 1.2 corsa simply isn't going to be up to towing logs or drain unblocking equipment. Only decent drain unblocking equipment I've seen involves a 500Kg tank of water. A Corsa will curl up and cry if you show it that.

It's evident that you need to do a lot more research on your costs for your business plans, as well as the legality of what you're planning to tow, and with what vehicle.
An 8k loan for a convicted drink driver to buy a 1.2 corsa and a trailer and some logs and a drain unblocking pump?! Doesn't sound like the most sound business prospect ever I'm afraid....
  • agree you havent thought this through a who lot, unblocking drains? i know that my water authority has taken private drains onto their books, and now look after them by instrucion from OFWAT.

also youd have to do a safe systems of work training, confind spaces training (that teaches you about gasses in drains etc and how to use a gas monitor) and also to touch any fresh water or work with dirty water you have to have a water hygien training and have a card to reflect you training in water hygien.

as for the corsa. youll probably kill it within 12 months if you intend on carrying any type of flushing system and pumps and rods and pipes, tools and a presure washer due to weight issues.

your better off talking with your banks buisiness advisor, because you have to have liability insurance also, and i dont think with the type of buisiness your going to do normal car insurance may not cover you under buisiness classes if you intend on having a trailer attached 24/7.
  • Well thanks for the advice - thinking of going to 1.4, with something with a good bit of space in the back.
