Insurance for Drink Drivers

Options
Who is best to get for this?

1 conviction, mildly over limit, don't know how many points I got, and was convicted in September 2009. Only got my license back in August.

I got a quote today for a hyundai 1.6 matrix for £7,000 - the car costs £4,500. I want a decent wagon for business but even I think a hatchback will set me back at least 2.5-3K and is no use as a 1 ltr engine I don't think would be able to tug a trailer. Could a 1.2 tug a trailer filled with wood or coal?

And is it possible to fit a tow bar onto a hatchback?

All you can do is shop around. Maybe try a google search for specialist insurers who provide cover, but you will be hit hard and the fact you were just over won't make a bit of difference, it's the offence code that they look at.

Did you need to apply for your licence back? It will have the point printed or written on it.
If you failed to send it off your licence may have been revoked. Seen a lot of this lately.

In the old days people would fail to send off the licence and carry on as normal, Risks were minimal.
But now they can see you should have returned to have the points put on and will be cancelled until
you re-apply, Leave it too long and you will have to get a provisional and start afresh.

A 1 litre or 1.2 will pull a small camping trailer. Couple of hundred kg in total weight. Unbraked trailer
cannot exceed 50% of the cars unladen weight.

EG. 1.0 Vauxall Corsa, 450kg unbraked or 750kg braked. But a braked trailer will be heavier so the the extra load
    capacity wont be much.
Also when you pull away and reach a hill you wont half notice that extra weight.

Not all cars have been type approved to have a towbar fitted. So check before you buy.

How much coal (weight) do you expect to move in one go and how far are you moving it? This will help decide what size car you need.

Did the £7k include business use which you obviously need?

Why did you get a 2 year ban instead of a 1 year ban just for for being 'mildly over the limit'??

And make sure you get cover for 'Business Use', as anything else would be null & void.
  • I didn't get a 2 year ban - I didn't resit my test until after two years - don't infer where you've no call to do so.

I've got the license but I can't see any points on it, including paper bit where penalty points column is blank. I was only driving 6 months when I lost license and only have it back form Mid-August.

Do the insurance companies even check to see if you lost the license to begin with or have a motoring conviction?
  • Was looking at a 1.2 corsa, can get a tow bar fitted for £180, which can hold I think 850kg braked, I would be taking agricultural waste such as felled and chopped trees. I would only be doing one job at a time so I assume a trailer would cover a tree felled and chopped to fit within it?

you didnt get points thats why there isnt points on it all you have is a code because you were banned.

you still drunk drove and being a newly passed driver in mix doesnt help you out with insurance your a risk because your newly passed your a high risk if your banned within you probationary 2 year period, then you have your area where you live if thats classed as high risk also then you have to turn your thinking cap on as you because you impossible to cover.

    area risk-high risk
ban code for DUI -high risk
risk because you lost your license withing 2 years of your probationary-high risk
recent retest-high risk your still a new driver, this is how the insurers see you and the price reflects how big a risk you are.
    under 25-high risk

i would be suprised if you could insure a 1.0l corsa for under £2.5k per year.

you intend on running some form of buisiness that involves use of personl vehicle, youd have to have buisiness use, again your high risk because you use your vehicle for work travel and private use.

i would strongly suggest looking a specialist company's who provide cheapish cover for those with points or bans, but still your looking at paying a higher premium because your very high risk.
  • I'm afraid I am not sure of the answers to your questions but just thought I would add....does your licence entitle you to pull a trailer? It used to be a standard entitlement, but now you have to take an additional test to tow one. I passed my test 10 years ago, and I don't have the correct entitlement to do so, so I would assume you don't automatically either. Just a thought?
