I expect that will be the end of the rent a roof schemes for a while, and pretty much the end of many people considering buying solar.
Be interesting to see what happens to existing rent a roof companies once they've pulled out of installing new systems - at least until the cost of panels comes down substantially.
I doubt it will be many years before the disparity in FITs paid to old and new systems is narrowed, and I doubt it will be narrowed by increasing new systems' fits, iyswim.
Of course these reductions are still proposals, and the industry will be using every trick in the book to stop them being adopted - but reality will prevail, with an acceptance that consumers simply can't afford madcap schemes such as these.0 -
would just mean the breakeven point for solar is increased to 20 years rather than 10 - that or we might see export meters now being fitted more , to give a higher percentage of the fit (a quiet house daytime might export 75%); interestingly theres now mention of >4kw systems , assuming they remain unchanged? - ofc you dont find many 5kw on the roof of a house (20+ panels)
edit:?
i can see rent a roof schemes actually charging a `deposit` for new entrants or a monthly/yearly contractual charge0 -
The sad part of this is that the existing regulation will persist.
At 22p/kWh (with export), I could source my own panels, and inverter, and put it up in a sunny bit of the garden quite easily, paying back in around 7 years.
But this isn't allowed, it's got to be an approved installer, approved panels, ...
I can see requiring approved inverters, but anything else should be in the realm of caveat emptor.
For example, consider the number of sheds that various garden centres sell.
It would be moderately trivial for them to sell a garden shed, with a solar roof, and inverter, all as one easy to use kit.0 -

Much as I think the whole FIT scheme is a joke and should never have been started, I really don't think there would be any justification for cutting FIT to existing private participants.
However I would love to see the 'Rent a Roof' companies, who clearly took advantage of a loophole to claim FIT at an individual's rate, caned.
It is crazy that firms who have installed scores of thousands of small systems will be collecting subsidies that we all pay - even the poorest in the land.
I would welcome a retrospective cut in FIT for these firms.0 -
They just sell the cashflow to another company. Take the money and run.
The new company will be run by ex-car clamping pitbull owners, who will have a company registration in Gibraltar. When you call up about your leaking roof, dogs will be barking in the background. A rough voice will advise you to filler it and put some gaffer tape on it: "That'll sort you out, mate."
Actually, these days, it could be posh boys living in the Cottswolds. They just put a recording of the noise from an impounding yard on when they answer the phone. East Ender accent from RADA, like in Two smoking barrels.0 -
still cant find anything about larger (and sub 50kw) installations0
