It depends on what definition of more expensive you're going for.
Your washing powder works out at 3.3p per wash, someone worked out that gloop is about 2p per wash the way they make it but there's more outlay at the start with gloop."We always find something, hey Didi, to give us the impression we exist?" Samuel Beckett, Waiting for Godot.

I have been using this recipe - got it off Pinterest.
1/4 cup Borax (I have borax substitute from Boots)
1/4 cup Washing soda
4 Tablespoons washing up liquid
Water
Essential Oil (optional)
I made it up in a 4 pint plastic milk bottle. It is not gloopy, much more liquid.
Can't really say how much it cost as the borax sub was bought ages ago, but the washing soda is under a pound. Maximum 50 pence a bottle?
I found it washes well but not sure regarding stained kids clothes etc. It is low suds.Grocery Challenge £139/240 until 31/01

Though it depends how much your time is "worth". Sure, if you could spend that time earning money, factor in the cost of making it - but equally you could say that it was time spent not watching the TV or surfing the internet, i.e. costing you less in electricity!0 -
I made a year's supply for about two quid. The actual time taken was about 30 minutes and most of that was grating up a bar of Fairy household soap.0

Surley gloop is more expensive to make
I get a box of washing powder which says 30 washes, and it lasts me far longer because Ionly use a 25ml scoop each time.0 -

Whilst researching gloop I came across soap nuts ... Never heard of them before.. They are natural soap.. Used in India I think... Anyway been eager to try them and found some in t*maxx ... 9.99 for 330 washes... Not bad! Hav used twice and so far so good! I do 3 washes a week so that's 2 + years of not having to buy detergent! ... Sounds too good to be true! Still hav some gloop incase soap nuts won't shift baby food stains! No more toys til Xmas 2022 , mfw 2023 challenge , Trying to not waste food , time or money and appreciate the moment more!0

I've just checked and my last batch of HM washing powder lasted me almost 8 weeks, not sure how many washes that is, but at least 50. If I use less borax in my powder I can get the cost of a batch down to nearly £1, so 2p per wash load! And it seems to wash very well, I do think the borax helps keep whites bright. I've made a few batches without it and things seemed to get a little grey after a while.
