I use Claire Gay's recipe (she of SuperScrimpers fame) as I don't want to use borax or a subsitute for it!

    Taken from her blog;

    What you need:

1 100% vegetable oil unscented soap I get mine from Waitrose for (£1.66 for 4 bars)
250 mls worth Washing Soda Crystals
    Essential Oil
    A large pan

    What you do:
Using a large pan with about 1 pint of water and bring to the boil.
Whilst the water is being brought to the boil, completely grate the bar of soap add this to the boiled water
You must make sure that all the soap has been completely dissolved before taking off the heat.
Add 250 mls (made up to around 1 pint with water) of the washing soda crystals and around 20 drops of your chosen essential oil.

Edit: the soap she's talking about is 125g worth so you can use any old soap :)

Wow, the goop I made yesterday turned out super solid! It's like poking a jelly when I prod it. Now I need to find some dirty things to wash so that I can test it. Never thought I'd get this excited about laundry but hey, it's the little things that make us happy, right? :)

Just made some gloop but it seems to have separated from the water, loads of water at the bottom but a thick scrambled egg substance floating on the top? I followed the instructions but think I've c0cked it up somewhere or should I keep stirring as the hours go by?

I buy borax off eBay (£5.68 or whatever it is for a kilo) and make it last 6 batches. A bar of soap is around 25p and a cup of washing soda is about 13p. £1.33 per batch and one batch lasts a month, I wash most days so it's still cheap! After reading on this thread that borax doesn't contribute much I may try a batch without it :)

Did you use borax? The mixture can separate on cooling if you've not ensured everything has dissolved completely before adding it to the hot water. Dunno what you should do now, but I'd use it regardless. Maybe let us know how you get on with it?

Thanks for the reply,I never used Borax and as far as I know I did everything to the letter.I shall scrap the scrambled egg looking bit off the top and use that and disregard the water at the bottom.
Shall do a load with it tomorrow.

Although I do use borax my gloop always separates out. I keep it in old plastic bottles and give it a good shake before I use it. This works fine for me.

I shall try some on a load tomorrow and see how it dissolves and if it works ok.If not I shall reheat it and see if that alters the consistency at all. This will not beat me! ;)

Pleased to say I used the separated attempt at gloop and it washed the clothes fine.I did put the mix back in the pan and added an extra bar if soap, melted it all down and added extra hot water at the end and I now have Gloop!
Can't wait to use it tomorrow.
