Really does depend on how much you want to spend, if you want noise reduction, in-ear, out-ear....
You could have a look at this range:

Personally, i use a set of 25 pound Philips noise reduction in-ear headphones when commuting/flying. They do use AAA batteries, but at least you can hear your music on the tube without deafening yourself0 -
Anything from Sennheiser - I don't like earphones myself, prefer headphones, but if their earphones are anything like their headphones, and going by what people have told me, they're good.
Hope this helps.Know me for who I am, not for who I say I am.0 -
You've got to go in-ear - will shut out all the nasty commuting noise and allow you to play your mp3s much quieter - better both for your ears and battery life too!
Further than that, around £30 seems to be the right money to spend for something with decent sound quality - I've some Sonys from argos that were around that price point and they sound nice.
Sennheiser ones are also pretty good around that money.0 -
I use these... but they're not really a budget option ;-)
Great quality - really good noise reduction.

Just a tip - if you have a 5th generation ipod - try out the earphones if possible before you buy. The more recent ipods (ipod video, for example) have an audible background hiss - you don't notice it when you use the lousy Mac buds, but as soon as you buy quality earphones, you can hear the hiss between tracks, and when the music is quiet.

Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j0 -
I had some sennheiser in-ear headphone with my ipod for a long while and I was more than happy with them. They'll only set you back about £15 from pretty much any store that stocks them. However I recently bought some Sure E2C in-ear for about £50 and I'm blown away by how good they are! I'd recommend them to anyone. Obviosly not exactly cheap, but as you listen to you ipos for a similar amount of time per day that I do, I'm certain you'll appreciate them. The only thing about me is the way I walk.0

those are excellent - got a pair myself otherwise sennheisers are good.0 -
I have Sure E2C's and once you get the right ear piece for your ear they are brilliant
a bit wierd at first as they block out all the background noise (not by adding sound like some do) but this means that you can hear fantastic clarity.
Give them a go if you can afford it but dont give up if you cant get on with them straight away0 -
I've just had a sony pair break on me this morning.
I've tried, from Amazon, these:

I've now had a white pair, black pair (current pair) and the ones with a plastic hook that goes over the ear.
I bought the second pair myself (to give them another try) but the 3rd pair were a present.
I'd avoid them. The sound is very good, but construction is awful. The rubber coating does come off as mentioned in a few Amazon review. I've had this pair since xmas and the left phone has no output.
I like the look of the Sennheiser CX300's. I've got a pair of PX100's which are excellent, although will let in noise.
The E2C's as mentioned as also very good. Quite possibly my next buy."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -
Can't recommend the E2C's enough! My mate got the Bose noise cancelling headphones (for $350!!) and the clarity and sound quality of the Sure's is better imo.
The only downside is that you'll want to update your itunes library to get a less 'lossy' compression so you can appreciate them fully!!The only thing about me is the way I walk.0 -
I'm using these https://www.krcs.co.uk/shop/product/details/sennheiser-cx300-black--no-returns- and they're frikkin sweet! Best earphones I've ever owned!0
