Pipes rattling - water hammer?

It might just be that the top of your vent stack is blocked but, if it was me, I would be draining a sink full of water out while holding each of those plastic pipes you can see in turn.
If it makes a difference to the noise then that is the one I would be seperating from the others or securing better.
That open ended bit of pipe looks a likely culprit to me, where does it come from?0 -

It wasn't supposed to be a like for like comparison (I suppose I could have left less to the imagination though) but its the same principle. You don't remove the underlying problem with water hammer by throttling back the main stopcock - all you do is treat the symptom not the cause. What happens when someone opens it up again?
