I've followed this thread with great interest, and can't believe the comments I have read. I don't have children, but I do have a rottie - I love my dog more than anything in the world, but I wouldn't leave her alone with a child - she is large, bounces around, and would easily knock over a child. having said that, I tie her up outside the local shop on a daily basis, and have come out to find her being gripped by a small child round the neck, whilst the parent does nothing. Thankfully, she seems scared of kids so has just sat there bewildered, but I have been horrified by the lack of concern by these parents. Any dog of any description can be dangerous, the usual phrase about there being no bad dogs, just bad owners spring to mind. I also have cats, and wouldn't leave a child with them - their tail could be pulled, the cat could bite, and then of course it would be my fault for having a badly behaved animal! I am full of admiration for the poster who has a rottie, 2 other dogs and is pregnant, and to the OP, I hope you managed to rehome your dog in the end, but I can't condone why you're doing it.

You have a responsibility to your dog, he is part of your family as much as your baby. Your baby does not come first where there are no problems with the dog

    Are you for real!!!!!!!!!

I hope to God you don't have children!!!!!!!!!!!

I hope to god you dont have any pets or kids - you dont deserve them! haha.
  • well sleepymy, I think the farmer like many dog owners would want shooting should they allow there child to play in a field with a ram,

Even if that small/medium dog had its jaws and teeth sunk firmly into a toddlers jugular vein?

Believe if I had to break his jaw I would, I would get it off the child. I just don't know if I would have the physical strength to do that with a large or muscular breed dog.

I am not against family dogs at all. I just think large and/or muscular dogs that your average mother couldn't get off in seconds SHOULD NOT LIVE IN A FAMILY HOME.

Those dogs have a place & it's working not as pets, its not fair on big dogs like that to keep them couped up in small homes.

I had someone live near me once had 2 rottweilers in a small flat!!!!!

loopydonna, but at least you could easily get her away from the milk, not the same as pulling a dog off her now is it. and you can simply buy milk i plastic cartons.

Like I said, I don't have a dog, but I'm trying to understand this from the dog owners side as they are getting a very hard time on this thread.

You have obviously made your mind up to attack every person who disagrees with you, which isn't what the site is about. It's a shame that an interesting thread has turned into a nasty cat fight.
  • All you people who say the child comes first say so because you are the sort of person who would tell off/smack a dog because he did something he shouldnt because he didnt know it was wrong, whereas if your baby did it you would teach them why it was wrong. You cant be bothered with training the dog because its easier to punish them, but if you did that with a child you would be in trouble with social services.

If the OP feels the type of dog he has doesnt fit with family life - he should have thought of that when he got the dog in the first place - and BEFORE he had the baby!

But how do you live in a normal sized family house with dogs & children & say they are NEVER alone together, I think it's impossible.

Could on of your children not wake in the night & wander downstairs without waking you?
Do you physically lock (with a key) your dog in/away at night?
Do you bring your children to the loo/bath/shower with you?
What about when the doorbell rings, do you bring the kids too?
What if your child falls asleep on the sofa & you need to pop upstairs to get something, do you wake them?
What about people who have 2 or more young childen & they go in different directions, what then???

You can never in a normal household say your dogs & children are never alone. If it were my child I would rather it meet a spaniel in the living room than a rottweiler:eek:

I agree. And especially with dogs like Rotts and Staffs. Of course the rott and staff owners will now jump up in arms and say oh never my dog, and things like "you obviously do not know about rotts and staffs". Even when they see and hear it on the news they would still naively think it could just never happen to them. I actually think its selfish of these parents to assume that the dog will never go for the child, and even worse to assume that at some point the children will not torment the dog. Children are children and will not do as they are told 100% of the time. I was stunned earlier when a poster blamed her child. I had never heard such passing of the buck in my life. How convenient for the parent to shift all blame from themselves and on to the child.

Thanks for that. I have some posts on the IVF thread, if I was lucky enough to have a baby I would take no chances with it.
& I do have a very happy cat.
