OP, you've been stitched up, you shouldn't have let him into your house, and the "just sign this" is a common tactic of theirs, you could try telling the magistrate that you didn't realise what you were signing and that you don't watch T.V as it's broadcast, but unfortunatly I don't think he'll belive you.
Just going by what it says on their website. Take it up with them if you have a problem.0 -
TV hater calls themselves Munch, a character off Two Pints, interesting. That gum you like is coming back in style.0

You do not need to inform TVL of anything at all, they may like you to but thats not the same as what is law or what you need to do.0 -
Indeed.
Assuming all this is true, then suggest this be a lesson to anyone who thinks about co-operating with TVL/BBC when attempting to prove they do not require a licence.
Again, under no circumstances let them into your house. Unless they have a warrant, they have no right of entry. Let them in and you are opening yourself to all sorts of potential problems.0 -
Hi guys, I took out a Virgin trial on 15/01/11 for the whole package for about two weeks before cancelling it vowing never to watch TV again.
I had a TV licence guy come round on a day I had off ill (just bad luck I guess) and inspect the box (which was unplugged as I didn't want it to use my electric - and I hate TV) which I let him do as I had nothing to hide, Virgin had been cancelled and that was that. To my horror, when he connected it and turned it on, BBC came up automatically...My first instinct was that Virgin was still charging me for the TV package!
They weren't but apparently, even when it's cancelled, you can still get all the normal channels which is stupid, I haven't subscribed and Virgin just hadn't come over to pick up their box yet, but had arranged that they would.
The guy who came in just told me as I obv didn't like TV, I would get a 'warning' which I was fine with as I had no intention of watching TV again... Just wanted him out my flat as I wasn't well, so I signed the bit of paper and he left.
I received a 'court summons' through my door this morning for a date which has already past, included with it is a the paper I signed. Turns out it wasn't a warning at all.
Not sure what to do... Help?
My mates asked me to go for a beer , after 12 pints I realised I did not like beer or the pub, so I drove home, on the way back a police car stopped me.................0 -

"I hate TV" isn't really a valid defence. You need to inform TV Licensing that you don't watch or record TV as it is broadcast, by signing their declaration online. This stops them sending you the standard letters they issue to unlicensed households.
TVL will still want to visit, best advice is don't talk to them at all, the people @ the door want their £20 commision......end of.0 -
Go to court with a solicitor, who should summons the TV person as a witness, state you dont watch it, you havent watched it, and that the TVL person connected it. you shoukld have a disconnection confirmation for virgin, in which case that is evidence that you didnt use the service from the date of cancellation
and see if they lie under oath
or your not telling the whole truth here...
and didnt you read what you were signing, before signing it... were you left with a copy ?0 -

Crap advice.
Why so? The fine is going to be more than the cost of a licence, even the 2 weeks of service the OP would be liable for a valid licence during that time. TVL want folk to have a license, so the OP is only cutting his nose to spite his face, the cost equates to less than £3 per week, all I watch is the chase and a bit of Sian in the mornings, the £146 is nowt to pay for saving having to wonder who is knocking at my door.0
