The noise margin figure is inversly proprtional to the sync speed.
If you suceed in removing noise from the system you should see an immediate increase in noise margin (bigger number), or an increase in download sync speed.
If the noise margin goes up but the sync remains the same then you,ll have to get on to the ISP to remove the cap from your speed.

I've got a 44db line, the stats below are pretty much typical.

Connection Speed 8190 kbps, 796 kbps
Line Attenuation 44.5 db, 24.6 db
Noise Margin 7.0 db, 12.1 db

The table below shows the relationship.

Atten. Line length. Potential Sync speed.
    32db.......2.3km.....16000kbps
    35db.......2.5km.....14500kbps
    40db......2.9km.......11800kbps
    45db.......3.2km.........8500kbps
    50db........3.6km........6500kbps
    55db........4.0km.........4500kbps
    60db........4.3km.........3200kbps
    65db........4.7km.........2000kbps

stats when in test socket with nothing else plugged in -
    System Up Time: 00:03:53

Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
    WAN PPPoA 377 500 0 746 4787 00:01:41
    LAN 100M/Full 979 0 0 1128 0 00:03:48
    WLAN 11M/54M 1738 2386 0 4059 1899 00:03:36
    ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3072 kbps 800 kbps
Line Attenuation 47 db 28 db
Noise Margin 21 db 11 db

Signal strength down to 4 bars.

does that change in noise margin mean I can get more speed then, and I just need to contact sky ? thanks

In the router stats information even though my polling stats have changed slightly why does the main page continue to show the old speed ? Is it a cunning clue to something set wrong somewhere ? I am really clutching at straws now !

    ADSL Firmware Version
    7.03.01.66
    Modem Status
    Connected
    DownStream Connection Speed
    2720 kbps
    UpStream Connection Speed
    800 kbps
    VPI

    VCI
    38

    thanks

OK You have fixed your internal wiring, or eliminated it.

Noise margin has increased dramatically to 21db from 7 db, this is good.

When you put everything back together do these remain the same?

If so you need to get on to Sky and get them to wind the wick up!!
PS they can read your router line statistics remotely.

First thing to do - try rebooting the router. If that doesn't help (resetting the SNR, hence speed, to normal) then contact Sky as mentioned above since their DLM will have applied a strict profile to maintain a stable connection.

I have put the plate back on and now connected the router to the main socket, still with nothing else connected. Line atten 48db but the noise margin is creeping down from 21db to 18 to 17 to 16 to 15.
Why would that be happening ?

thanks for all you help with this.

No extensions connected to the back of the faceplate?
Or if they are bell wires removed? Remember any extensions that are being used must have a filter, that includes your Sky box or burglar alarm.
Possibly corrosion on the plug and socket, give them a rub with a cotton bud.

Noise margin will start to drop as the sun goes down and it gets dark, possibly by 3-4 db or so. Same as medium wave radio gets noisy after dark.

all phones reconnected, with bell wires removed from all. Router still in hall in main socket along with phone. All phones working ok. Down to 3 bars signal on router. Rebooted router.
    Latest stats -
    System Up Time: 00:04:35

Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
    WAN PPPoA 197 177 0 155 418 00:02:40
    LAN 100M/Full 759 0 0 691 0 00:04:30
    WLAN 11M/54M 1087 1692 0 1278 1103 00:04:18
    ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3072 kbps 800 kbps
Line Attenuation 48 db 28 db
Noise Margin 14 db 8 db

seems to be sticking at the 3072 downstream speed.
does this tell us enough to know that I should be getting a faster speed if I contact sky ?

thanks so much for all of your help.
