If your line is presently normal ADSL (up to 8meg) then on ADSL2+ LLU the 47dB will probably become 49dB. Try the link above to get an idea of speed versus attenuation. :)

Something not quite right there, the upstream is good the downstream is about half expected.
When you say " connecting to the main socket etc" have you tried the test socket behind the main socket if you have one?

What is it that tells you something is not quite right ?? Any advice on what I can do to put it right please ?
I have tried the test socket.

I am reading allsorts of information on various sites and I feel sure I should be getting better speed than I am.

thanks for all replies so far.

I wonder if anyone has any further advice please? I am still struggling with speed. Still around the 2.5 mark. I have been looking on 'speedguide.net' today and tried the tcp optimizer and some other tweaks. Tried changing the channel. Tried unchecking the 'Allow Broadcast of Name (SSID)'.

I am not clear what I can do to get around the earlier comment that we seem to only be getting about half of what we should - any help with that at all please ?

Or do I have to accept that I am fighting a losing battle ! thanks in advance

The following are the stats after hard wiring the router (I think I have done it right !) It has not made any difference to the actual speeds, just those figures in 1st few lines, but I am not sure what they tell me.

    System Up Time: 00:11:15

Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
    WAN PPPoA 1503 1417 0 463 2292 00:08:58
    LAN 100M/Full 4139 6887 0 3093 2502 00:11:10
    WLAN 11M/54M 4890 1594 0 2030 640 00:10:58
    ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2656 kbps 800 kbps
Line Attenuation 47 db 28 db
Noise Margin 5 db 8 db

Your router is running on the limit with a downstream noise margin of 5db its barely synchronising.

Have you plugged the router into the master socket?
Do a quiet line test with a wired phone.
Do you have any hardwired extensions?
If so have you removed the bell wire to pin 3?

Hello, sorry if I misled - those were the stats after I had connected back to the ethernet cable to see if it made any difference as I had read about most people getting far better results through the cable. Unfortunately for me it made no difference.

My stats now back to wireless are -
    System Up Time: 00:58:34

Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
    WAN PPPoA 80914 139745 0 2265 56935 00:56:39
    LAN 100M/Full 6079 2191 0 453 123 00:58:29
    WLAN 11M/54M 140983 84798 0 61819 2666 00:52:47
    ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2688 kbps 800 kbps
Line Attenuation 47 db 28 db
Noise Margin 7 db 8 db

I have tried the quiet line test and there was no noise. We have 4 phones on the lines (REN 1 each) plus the router which I have read doesn't count towards the recommended 4 - is that correct ? I think that is the answer to the hardwired extension question ?? All phones are on prperly fitted extension with a little plug in box.

I have tried the router in the master socket and the test socket and apart from weaking the signal to computer (at other side of house) it didn't help with the speed.
I am just reading the website about the bell wire - I haven't done anything with that.

    thanks

Your problem is definitely nothing to do with wireless, its all to do with the router, your phone wiring and possible problems with the phone line.

When you tried the test socket were all your extensions disconnected?

Everything else was still connected when I tried the test socket (except the main phone into that main socket). thanks

I will try again in the test socket with everything disconnected first then I will check all the wires to remove the bell wire. thanks (I have read that each change made needs time to become effective - is that true or should we see any effect immediately ?) thanks again
