Orange iphone 4S :(

Hi all. My daughter signed up for a 24mnth contract in store for an Orange iphone 4S this weekend. On her initial visit the saleswoman asked if she had a member of the family who worked for the NHS as this would afford her a sizeable discount in her monthly payments (ie., £32 as opposed to £46 per month). Her brother works for the NHS and she left the store in order to call him to OK this. On her return to the Orange store (barely 30 minutes later) the previous saleswoman wasnt available and the salesman available at the time said this NHS discount was no longer available. She decided foolishly to sign up there and then for a contract she could not really afford. I went back to the store the day after, along with her brother and we were told this offer is only available online. We accepted this information but we asked if she could cancel the contract and return the (as yet unused) phone. The reverse of the receipt states there is a 14 day cooling off period. We have been told this is only relevant for online purchases and have been refused a cancellation of this contract that she can ill-afford to pay. Does anyone know the consumer rights on cancellation of such contracts and have we been given the correct information? Many thanks!

  • There is a cooling off period by law. I know with T mobile, its 7 days, but if your reciept states 14 days, then 14 days it must be :)

    I also work for the NHS and had it confirmed to me that we can get NHS discount of 25% on iphone tarrifs, but its just too pricey for me!

    I agree, but this is down to their internal policy, not law, and I cannot find any information online confirming this.

    It would be interesting to see the full text printed on the back of the receipt. Almost certainly they are talking rubbish when they say that something printed on the in-store receipt applies only to online purchases.

    Don't know whether it's worth mentioning, but interestingly just found this on another MSE thread....

    "A family member was going to take up this 25% off deal but he was told that because its only given in store and not online that it works out about the same because orange give better deals online. He then decided not to take it up and took the deal offered over the phone. Is this right? or would they have been trying to get him to take the deal over the phone rather than go into a store to get the 25% discount?"

    This was posted in August, not sure if that makes a difference. But it appears Orange are claiming it to be an IN-STORE promotion one minute, then an ONLINE promotion the next! Hmmmm, whichever suits them best at the time I'm guessing??? :mad:

    Absolutly, they could say it's only applicable to NHS employees with three Z's in their surname.

    Any internal offer like this is subject to the companies goodwill, it's not a right, it's something they offer over and above.

    Just found link to Orange "Perk" promotion t's and c's you refer to:

    States promotion can only be obtained IN STORE...so they appear to have given you false info, according to their own T's and C's

    The iPhone 4s isn't available on the perks discount anyway, no matter what the t&c's say! I have even spoke to the executive office who state that it's not available yet, but maybe in a couple of months time.

    Where is there any information about this Perks Discount... Does it definately still exist? Everything I've found online is from back in April. Even the t's and c's Orange document I found states its valid until 30th September...CONFUSED.COM :undecided

  • Thank you everyone for your comments. It seems to me that Orange need to make their minds up whether the offer is on or not and if it is, then exactly what it covers. Each member of staff (and we have visited two separate stores) have all given contradictory information and I have to say I would never ever be tempted to buy anything from Orange because of their attitude. The offer is still showing on the NHS website so who the hell is right!!!! It would be nice to hear officially from Orange. Not a nice feeling to think they are duping a young girl into a very expensive contract for the next 2 years if it is the case that the offer would have been available to her (as the first assistant told her).

    Also, just what the 14 day cooling off period actually covers and if it is only for online purchases why does it not say that on the back of the receipt? Or is this left open to give Orange a get out in cases like this????

    Come on Orange - would be nice to hear from you. Put us all in the picture please???????????????
