Buyers do have comeback if you misrepresented the car, ie said it was one thing and it was the other.

You admitted a mistake tbh I think I would reasonable expect a reduction in price. Its best to always give an accurate description that way no comeback.

Thank you all so much for your detailed responses. One thing I should mention is that I told the buyer that I had made an error with the mileage when they came to collect the car which is why I am reluctant to offer a refund or part refund. I don't have any written proof however as I only noticed the mistake the day they came to collect it. Does this help with regards to the mileage dispute? I'm not a car dealer however I don't expect the difference between 80k and 90k mileage to affect the value too much as it was sold way below the expected price (comparing like for like previous eBay sales).

    Many thanks again.

Oh if thats the case and you told them about mileage then sounds like they are trying it on but they may well win unless you have proof ie sign a disclaimer or possible a witness. Adverts have to be accurate we all know mistakes can happen but always worth covering yourself as this one sounds like they are trying it on

If you informed him of the mistake and he chose to buy the car anyway then yes that does change things, but as you have no proof of this then you might still be in bother if he decides to lie about it.

If he drove of in car he must have seen mileage I wonder if he thought I get the seller as they miss described the listing

Unless you have proof I think unfortunately it might be better to offer something back and put it down to experience. How much did car go for?

My boyfriend was with me the whole time - could he be my witness if this goes any further?

Yes especially if he has good character. Did they have a witness

If not call their bluff. They sound like a chancer knowing you made a mistake tried to rectify it and probably thought I know I take them for a ride later

  • Don't think it is a chancer, just someone who looked at the paperwork again and saw the mileage was higher than advertised. However, they were informed of this and still bought it. They probably mentioned it to a friend who advised them to "have a go" and see what comes back.

As an old car, condition is more important than an extra 10k on the clock.

I'd offer nothing, simply stating you informed them of the higher mileage when they inspected the vehicle and they still went ahead with the purchase. Way down the line and subject to no negative feedback, I'd mentally be prepared to offer a little but not a whole heap, perhaps £50/100.

Mileage was correct at time of listing, You did the extra 10,000 miles in the past 7 days didnt you.

They inspected the car and paid. If your feeling generous offer them £50.

If they whinge, moan or harass you. Offer them nothing. You told them about the mileage and gave them
every chance to check and inspect the car. You offered them the chance to walk away but they bought
    its after inspecting it.

Someones told them they paid too much and they could have got a cheaper car. Always something cheaper
    out there.

Politely state that as the buyer had every opportunity to inspect the vehicle (which is a 9 year old, second hand vehicle where you pointed out the major imperfections in bodywork), that you pointed out the mileage discrepancy to the buyer before completion on what (I assume, perhaps wrongly) is a low value vehicle anyway and the buyer chose to complete the sale you will be offering no refund. Also take the opportunity to welcome any investigation from ebay.

If they're at it you'll never hear from the buyer again - if not you may have to answer a couple of ebay emails then probably no more.
